In 2019, ten Indian artists used the 36 Days of Type Instagram challenge to test ideas across fantasy, food, fear, nature, street life and emotion. Scroll.in’s May 5, 2019 feature captures how each participant made the daily letter-or-number prompt personal—through watercolor, digital coloring, photography, natural materials, texture studies and writing.
What was the 36 Days of Type challenge?
In its 2019 account, Scroll.in described 36 Days of Type as an open-call project begun in 2014 by Spanish graphic designers Nina Sans and Rafa Goicoechea. Participants interpreted a letter or number each day for 36 days, sharing their work on Instagram with #36daysoftype. The feature says selected designs might appear in the project gallery; it does not establish whether the format or gallery process remains the same today.
The 2019 challenge began April 2, according to the feature. The ten profiles show how one shared prompt could lead to very different kinds of image-making, from a tightly connected series to daily experiments with materials and subjects.
Ten artists, ten approaches
Rajasee Ray: fantasy worlds and digital color
Ray built 36 fictional worlds inspired by fantasy books, including The Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter. She had recently begun coloring digitally and using Procreate, and said the series helped her become more familiar with the app.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How the artists made the daily prompt their own
The projects suggest several useful ways to think about a creative prompt, without implying that one approach is better than another:
- Build a connected world: Ray’s fantasy-inspired scenes and Narvankar’s witchcraft theme gave individual letterforms a broader narrative or research-led context.
- Start from personal memory: Srinivas’s food illustrations connected familiar subjects with a wish to share their variety.
- Choose a subject with a wider message: Norbhu and Prabhat used the series to address fear and threatened animals, while Lunawara focused on the people who sell food on the street.
- Let materials lead: Joshi’s garden finds and Arora’s texture experiments made the physical or visual qualities of the medium part of the concept.
- Pair image-making with another practice: Lunawara brought photography into his exploration, while Shweta Sharma combined drawings with writing.
As these 2019 profiles show, a repeated format need not produce repeated-looking work. The daily structure could support a story, a study of materials, a record of familiar subjects or a way to explore a larger idea.
