Company paintings offer an unusually broad view of life in British India: workers and households appear alongside festivals, animals, plants, monuments and travel scenes. They are not neutral snapshots. Indian artists made them within regional traditions, while European patrons, scientific interests and souvenir markets influenced what was commissioned and how it was presented.

What are Company paintings?

“Company painting” or “Company School” is a broad label for works made by Indian artists during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, often for European patrons connected with East India companies. The Metropolitan Museum of Art uses approximately 1770–1850 as a useful frame for the genre, although related practices changed over time and did not follow one uniform timeline.

As the British East India Company expanded beyond trade, more officers and their families lived in India. Some became patrons of local artists. Artists, including painters trained in late-Mughal techniques, adapted their practices to European tastes, travel interests and emerging scientific curiosity. The result was a group of regional practices—not a single standardized national style.

Why they are valuable for studying everyday life

Earlier court painting often concentrated on rulers, ceremonies and elite settings. Company commissions widened the visible subject matter. Artists depicted occupations, clothing, household activity, festivals, servants, vehicles, horses, buildings, plants and animals. Albums and matched sets could organize people by trade or social category, making work and dress especially prominent.

Such images let viewers ask concrete questions: What tools are shown with a trade? How are garments arranged? What kinds of carts, carriages or domestic objects appear? How are streets, fields and buildings connected? The paintings provide visual evidence for those questions, but each image records a representation shaped by an artist, a patron and an intended audience—not a complete census of society.

Occupations and working scenes

Series devoted to castes or trades may show a husband and wife together, with tools and clothing identifying their work. A basket maker and his wife, for example, present labor through people, equipment and dress rather than through a written occupational label. Harvest scenes similarly connect bodies, tools, crops and landscape.

People, dress and social categories

Portraits and figure studies range from individual likenesses to grouped “types.” A Brahmin couple is one example of a pair presented through clothing, posture and social identity. These classifications can be useful evidence about how people were represented, while also reflecting European habits of sorting and categorizing Indian society.

Festivals and ceremonies

The Patna artist Sewak Ram is associated with large paintings of festivals and ceremonies. Such works can show processions, crowds, performers, buildings and objects at once, making them especially rich for studying public activity. Their scale and visual abundance should not be mistaken for proof that every participant or event looked exactly as depicted.

Animals, plants and natural history

Natural-history commissions placed Indian flora and fauna before European viewers. Lord Impey and the Marquess Wellesley are associated with animal commissions in Calcutta. The Metropolitan Museum of Art identifies Great Indian Fruit Bat, attributed to Bhawani Das and dated circa 1777–82, as an example. A work such as this may combine close observation with the expectations of a commissioned specimen image.

Monuments, travel and picturesque scenery

By the early nineteenth century, sets of monuments, occupations, festivals and costumes were marketed to travelers and other European audiences. Landscapes and architectural views could therefore function as souvenirs as well as records of place. Their selection tells us what patrons considered worth collecting and carrying home.

Regional styles, materials and formats

Company painting varied considerably by location and local artistic history. Important centers included Calcutta, Varanasi, Madras, Delhi, Patna and Thanjavur. Artists borrowed or adapted European conventions such as linear perspective, modeled shading and watercolor, but these devices appeared differently in different regional practices.

Aspect What the evidence shows
Regional traditions Works grew from local practices, including late-Mughal lineages; there was no single Company style.
Paper and watercolor Watercolor and European pictorial conventions appear in some works, especially those made for albums and views.
Mica South Indian paintings could use gouache on mica. Mica images were portable souvenirs and could be repeated from models by different artists.
Formats Individual studies, albums and serial sets served different patrons and purposes.

Medium matters when interpreting an image. A translucent mica souvenir, an opaque watercolor on paper and a detailed natural-history sheet were made for different uses and should not be judged by a single standard of authenticity or finish.

How patronage shaped what viewers see

European demand encouraged subjects that could be collected, classified, studied or shown to visitors. Marketable sets made occupations, costumes and monuments legible to people unfamiliar with India. At the same time, Indian artists and patrons exercised choices about pose, detail, composition and regional visual language. The images therefore reflect several forms of agency rather than a one-way European design imposed on passive makers.

This context explains why an apparently ordinary scene may still be selective. A commission could highlight an unusual trade, a recognizable costume or a picturesque activity because those features interested its buyer. The absence of a group or practice is not evidence that it did not exist.

Delhi

The Ghulam ‘Ali Khan family is associated with village scenes and portraiture. Their work demonstrates how Company-period commissions could remain connected to established Delhi painting traditions while addressing new audiences.

Calcutta

Calcutta attracted commissions involving animals and natural-history subjects, including work associated with Lord Impey and the Marquess Wellesley.

How to read a Company painting carefully

  1. Identify the subject. Ask whether the image is an occupation study, portrait, festival, landscape, monument, animal or plant depiction.
  2. Look for the commission’s audience. A portable set or souvenir likely served a different purpose from a private album or scientific commission.
  3. Examine material and technique. Note paper or mica, watercolor or gouache, perspective, shading and the handling of line.
  4. Separate depiction from generalization. Describe what the artist represents; do not claim that it proves how everyone lived.
  5. Consider classification. Paired figures, trade labels and repeated formats may reflect European systems of categorization as well as local ways of presenting people.
  6. Compare regionally. Differences between Patna, Delhi, Calcutta, Madras, Thanjavur and other centers may reveal local traditions more clearly than a single definition of “Company style.”

What changed in the nineteenth century?

The genre’s momentum weakened as photography was introduced to India in the early 1840s. Photography offered patrons a new way to collect portraits, places and information, altering the market for painted views and studies. This was a change in practice and demand, not an instantaneous end to every related painting tradition.
