Flemish artist François Balthazar Solvyns made prints of people and everyday life in Calcutta, where he lived from 1791 to 1803. His images record occupations, transport, festivals, customs and dress—but they are not neutral portraits of all Indian people. They are visual documents shaped by a European colonial gaze, and should be read with that context in view.
Who was François Balthazar Solvyns?
François Balthazar Solvyns, also catalogued as Frans Balthazar Solvyns, was a Flemish marine painter and printmaker. He lived in Calcutta from 1791 to 1803, where he made etchings depicting aspects of Bengali society. The people in these works are often shown as occupational, costume or social types rather than identified individuals; the title “portraits” should not be taken to mean that each sitter is named.
The images range across work and public life, including transport, festivals, customs and clothing. A coloured market scene offers one glimpse of Calcutta, while LACMA’s Woman in Grand Attire depicts a wealthy Hindu woman with attendants, a fan, betel and a hookah.

How the editions differ
Solvyns’s images appeared in several publications. The dates and plate counts below describe different editions and catalogue records, not a single unchanging set.

What the prints show—and what they cannot tell us
Scenes of work and social life
The series makes occupations, clothing and public customs visible through carefully composed images. In the market scene, people appear within a setting of exchange and activity. In Woman in Grand Attire, the woman’s attendants and the objects around her help establish status and social setting. These details offer evidence about how Solvyns pictured daily life; they do not, by themselves, establish that a scene was typical or that every object carried the meaning a viewer might infer.
Images made for a European audience
The Smithsonian National Museum of Asian Art situates the prints within European and colonial efforts to classify Indian people. It notes that Europeans used such images to identify and evaluate people, and that the collection later served as a design source that encouraged stereotypes. Read the visible details separately from the categories and interpretations attached to them: a print can show a person or activity, while its title or accompanying explanation makes a broader claim that should not automatically be accepted as fact about Indian society.

Who coloured the etchings?
Wellcome’s record says Solvyns employed local Indian artists to apply watercolour to the etchings. That attribution points to collaboration in the production of at least some coloured examples. The record does not name those artists or describe their individual contributions, so it cannot support more specific claims about who painted particular passages or under what conditions.

Catalogue searches are easier if you try the artist’s name variants and the titles attached to different editions. For a focused scholarly guide, Sir John Soane’s Museum cites Richard L. Hardgrave Jr.’s A Portrait of the Hindus: Balthazar Solvyns & the European Image of India, 1760–1824. The University of Texas Solvyns Project describes the book as reproducing and annotating the etchings.
