Yes—a 50mm lens can make strong astrophotography images, especially of constellations and tighter Milky Way regions. Its narrower view makes it a poor fit for sweeping sky-and-landscape compositions, and its focal length limits how long you can expose before stars begin to trail. If you already own a fast 50mm prime, it is a practical lens to try before buying anything wider.
What does 50mm frame in the night sky?
A 50mm lens gives you a tighter view than a typical wide-angle astrophotography lens. Nikon lists its AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8G at a 47° angle of view on full frame and 31°30′ on Nikon DX cameras. Those figures illustrate how much the sensor changes the composition: on DX, the same lens captures a smaller portion of the sky.
That tighter framing can work well for a constellation, a selected Milky Way region, or a night-sky subject paired with a modest amount of foreground. It is less convenient when the goal is to fit a broad sweep of the Milky Way and a large landscape into one frame. Digital Camera World’s 2026 guide gives about 10mm to 35mm as a general full-frame range for astrophotography lenses, emphasizing the wider field many sky compositions need. A 50mm is better treated as a specialist option than an all-purpose choice for the widest views.

On APS-C, 50mm is not automatically too narrow, but the narrower angle of view makes broad compositions harder still. Check the field of view on your own camera rather than assuming a 50mm will frame like it does on full frame.
When is a 50mm lens a good choice?
- You want a close composition. Isolate a constellation or a denser section of the Milky Way instead of trying to include the whole sky.
- You already own a fast prime. An f/1.8 maximum aperture can help you use a shorter shutter time or a lower ISO in dim conditions. Canon describes the f/1.8 aperture on its RF50mm F1.8 STM as enabling faster shutter speeds in low light and helping reduce noise in an image; actual results depend on camera settings and conditions.
- You plan to stack frames. Multiple exposures can be combined in processing, making a fixed tripod setup useful for tighter sky subjects.
- You can track the sky. An equatorial tracker can allow longer exposures for faint targets, but it needs suitable polar alignment and does not remove the need to compose for the lens’s narrower field.
What settings should you start with?
There is no single best exposure for every 50mm lens and camera. Use these as practical setup choices, then check focus, star shape, and exposure on your own equipment.

- Mount the camera on a sturdy tripod. Turn off stabilization if your camera or lens instructions recommend doing so on a tripod.
- Set the lens near f/1.8. A wide aperture gathers more light, but some lenses show coma or astigmatism near the frame edges when used wide open. If corner stars look distorted, try stopping down a little and compare the added sharpness against the loss of light.
- Focus manually on a bright star. Use live view magnified on the star, adjust focus until it is as small and crisp as possible, then avoid touching the focus ring. Autofocus may not lock reliably in a dark sky.
- Start with a shutter time near 10 seconds. The 500 rule gives 500 ÷ 50mm = about 10 seconds as an estimate for an untracked setup. It is a rough guideline, not a guarantee: acceptable trailing depends on factors including sensor resolution, viewing conditions, and how closely you inspect the image.
- Choose ISO by checking the result. Raise it as needed to record the sky at your chosen shutter time, while watching for excessive noise or blown highlights.
- Capture RAW files and several frames. RAW preserves more editing flexibility, while multiple exposures provide options for selecting or stacking images.
How do you decide whether to use a different lens?
Choose based on the picture you want, not just the focal length printed on the lens. Compare the actual field of view on your sensor, maximum aperture, and how sharp the lens remains near wide open. For stars, inspect coma, astigmatism, and corner star shape; these vary by lens, so a general 50mm specification cannot establish how a particular model performs. Also confirm camera-mount compatibility and whether your setup will use a tripod alone or a tracker.
If a broad Milky Way landscape is the priority, a wider lens is usually the more suitable starting point. If you want a constellation or a tighter celestial subject, a 50mm can be a sensible choice. For longer exposures on faint targets, consider an equatorial tracker and plan for polar alignment.
