For a beginner-friendly night sky on canvas or a primed panel, use acrylics: establish a dark or colorful sky, blend or layer the colors, let the background become ready for detail, then add stars and an optional moon or foreground silhouette. This guide sticks to acrylic materials and handling; watercolor uses different paper and paint techniques.
Gather acrylic materials and prepare your surface
Use acrylic paint, a primed artist panel or canvas, and brushes. A larger brush is useful for the sky; keep a smaller detail brush handy for selected stars or a shooting star. Choose a few sky colors before you begin: a dark base can make white stars stand out, while bands or patches of other colors can give the sky more variation.
Protect the area around your painting if you plan to flick paint for stars. Spattering can send paint beyond the surface, so clear nearby objects first.

Paint the sky background
Lay in a dark or multicolor base
Cover the painting area with a dark color, or place several colors in broad sections for a more colorful sky. Work while the paint is still workable if you want to blend neighboring colors. Acrylic night-sky tutorials also demonstrate building color in layers rather than relying on one flat coat.

Blend or layer for atmosphere
Soften the transitions between adjacent colors with your brush, or keep some boundaries visible for a more graphic, layered look. These are different visual choices, not a guarantee of a perfectly seamless blend. Let the background become ready for small details before moving on; the sources do not establish a universal drying time.
Add stars with a method that suits your composition
Flick paint for scattered stars
Load a brush with white paint and flick it over the sky to make an irregular field of small dots. Try the motion away from the painting first if you are unsure how large the splatters will be. Use a smaller brush for a few deliberate stars afterward, rather than filling every open area.

Paint selected stars or a shooting star
For more control, place individual dots with a small detail brush. A short curved or diagonal stroke can suggest a shooting star. Treat this as an accent: a few intentional marks can create a focal point without competing with the wider sky.
Choose an optional finishing detail
A moon or dark foreground silhouette can help anchor the composition, but neither is required. Add only what supports the scene you want: a simple horizon or tree line gives the sky context, while leaving the sky open keeps attention on its color and stars.
