Start by deciding whether your priority is to preserve the album as a family object, share its photographs, or ask a repository about its historical interest. For most albums, the safest first steps are to keep photographs in place, improve storage, and digitize carefully if you want easier access. A digital copy can reduce handling; it is not a reason to discard the original.

Choose what matters most about the album

An old album is more than a stack of prints: its order, captions, and physical pages can preserve context that individual photographs do not. The Library of Congress describes albums as records and notes that access to their contents is a reason to collect and preserve them. If sequence or handwritten notes matter to your family, leave photographs in place unless there is a clear preservation reason and a safe plan to move them.

  • Keep the album: Best when its arrangement, inscriptions, or physical form are meaningful.
  • Share the contents: Digitize pages or prints to make viewing easier without repeatedly handling the original.
  • Explore a repository: Ask an archive, museum, library, or historical society if the material fits its collecting scope.

These choices can be combined: keeping the album, making digital copies, and asking a repository about its interest are not mutually exclusive.

Handle it gently and avoid quick fixes

Work on a clean surface, support heavy pages, and avoid forcing a bound album to lie flat. The Library of Congress recommends clean hands or clean nitrile gloves, handling photographs by their edges, and avoiding contact with the image. Its guidance calls careful handling “one of the more effective, cost-efficient, and easily achieved preservation measures.” Library of Congress: Care, Handling and Storage of Photographs

Pioneer Photo Albums Photo Storage Box, Black
  • Solid black only
  • Heavy duty storage box
  • Metal identification plate
  • Index cards included
  • Photo safe: acid free
  • Do not use tape, glue, rubber bands, or paper clips on photographs.
  • For paper-page albums that need photo attachment, use non-adhesive photo corners rather than tape or glue.
  • Do not assume a product is photograph-safe from its label alone; the Library of Congress points to relevant specifications such as the Photographic Activity Test (PAT).

Improve storage before attempting restoration

Store the album flat in a well-fitting preservation-quality box, protected from light, dust, and pests. Choose a cool, relatively dry, stable location; avoid damp basements, hot attics, garages, heating or cooling vents, and places at risk of leaks.

The Library of Congress gives approximately 35% relative humidity as a recommendation for scrapbooks and albums. Its broader guidance for many photographic materials describes 30–50% relative humidity and 70°F or below as a suitable general environment. These are not universal prescriptions for every album: photographic processes and materials affect the appropriate conditions. See Library of Congress: Care, Handling and Storage of Photographs and Library of Congress: Care, Handling and Storage of Scrapbooks and Albums.

Digitize for easier viewing and sharing

Digitizing can make an album easier to share while reducing the need to handle the original. The National Archives notes that “Digitizing your originals can allow you to view and share your items without handling, which can cause damage.” Keep the physical album after scanning: digital files can also be lost, so they are a useful access copy rather than a replacement. For a bound album

Support the book with a copy stand, wedges, or a cradle. Do not force the binding open or press the volume flat to get a scan.

Keep the identifying details

Add basic information to digital files where known: who, what, where, and when. If album order matters, preserve it in the file sequence or note it in filenames or accompanying records. The National Archives recommends adding basic metadata; retaining sequence helps carry forward the context conveyed by the album.

Sort only if a smaller selection would help

If you want to reduce a snapshot collection, the National Archives describes weeding out poor prints, duplicates, and less desirable photographs before housing the best. Treat that as an option, not a reason to discard without review. Ask relatives about unidentified people and record identifications before separating or removing photographs; otherwise, useful context may be lost.

Ask a repository before offering an album

If the album documents a distinctive person, community, event, business, or place, contact a local historical society, archive, museum, or library. Describe what it contains, where and when the photographs were made if known, and whether the album is intact or has captions. Ask whether the material fits the institution’s collecting scope and what its intake process requires.

Acceptance is never guaranteed. The Library of Congress collecting policy identifies intact, unpublished, bound photo albums as a format it collects, but that does not promise acceptance of a particular family’s album. Library of Congress: Prints and Photographs Division Collection Policy

Stop if a photograph is stuck or fragile

Do not pry up a photograph stuck to glass or another image, and do not try heat, water, solvents, or improvised adhesive removers. The Library of Congress warns that stuck photographs can be difficult or impossible to separate without serious damage. If a photograph is brittle, valuable, or likely to crease, dent, or tear during removal, stop and consult a photograph conservator. Library of Congress: Care, Handling and Storage of Photographs
