GIMP is the strongest default choice for Linux users looking for a free desktop editor for photographs and general image work. The project describes it as a cross-platform image editor, including for GNU/Linux, with tools for photo manipulation, image composition, authoring, and color management. GIMP’s interface and workflow are not designed to duplicate Photoshop exactly. 2. Krita: the best fit for painting and illustration

What makes Krita suitable for painters
Krita’s focus is painting rather than reproducing every Photoshop photo-editing workflow. A 2026 Creative Bloq comparison reports 100 brush types, nine brush engines, and a brush stabilizer; these are published comparison figures, not an independent performance benchmark. A current Ubuntu-app roundup also notes that a pressure-sensitive drawing tablet can improve the experience and names the Huion HS64 as an entry-level option. A tablet is optional: it matters most if pressure-sensitive drawing is central to your work.
3. Photopea: the quickest browser option for PSD access
Photopea runs in a web browser, so it does not require a Linux desktop installation. It is useful for occasional edits, PSD handoffs, Chromebook or locked-down machines, and situations where you cannot install packages. The cited comparison reports support for Photoshop PSD files as well as JPG, PNG, RAW, Sketch, and GIMP files, along with layers, masks, blend modes, and familiar selection tools.
