To turn one AutoCAD block into separate editable objects without removing the rest of your drawing, select its block reference in the drawing and run EXPLODE (or X). Explode the selected insertion in model space or paper space—not from inside Block Editor. The drawing remains, and the original block definition stays available for reuse.
Explode the selected block reference
- Save a working copy of the DWG. This is especially prudent before changing a block that has many insertions or attributes.
- Select the block insertion you want to make editable in the drawing area.
- Run
EXPLODEorXand confirm the selection if prompted. AutoCAD disassembles that reference into its component objects; it does not erase the rest of the drawing. - Check the result. The objects can now be edited individually. If they appear to vanish, check whether their layers are off or frozen.

Choose the right operation for what you want to change

Autodesk’s AutoCAD 2026 help notes that saving Block Editor changes replaces the existing definition and immediately updates its references: About Modifying Block Definitions. Use this route when you want the shared block changed, not converted into separate entities.
If AutoCAD will not explode the block
A block can be configured to disallow exploding. In Block Editor, inspect the block definition’s Allow Exploding setting; if it is set to No, change it to Yes and save before trying to explode its references. The Autodesk Community discussion that addresses this problem also notes other possible causes, including locked layers, proxy objects, a damaged drawing, anonymous block names, or files created or saved by third-party software. The appropriate fix depends on the message and drawing context; these are diagnostic possibilities, not guaranteed remedies.

If the command seems to work but the geometry is no longer visible, inspect layer visibility and frozen states. Layer 0 is worth checking when the block’s contents were drawn on it, but an off or frozen Layer 0 is only one possible explanation.
Keep the block definition or remove it?
Exploding a reference does not delete its definition. If you want to keep the block available for later insertion, leave it in the drawing. If you intend to remove an unused definition, Autodesk documents PURGE as a separate cleanup operation; all references to that block must be erased before its definition can be purged. Do not purge it merely to make one insertion editable.

Where to run the command
The reader’s wording comes from an AutoCAD Community question about getting a plain editable drawing in model space and paper space. The key distinction is where the command is applied: select and explode the block reference in the drawing. Editing inside Block Editor changes the definition; it is not the same as breaking the selected insertion into components. Interface labels can vary among AutoCAD products and platforms, but the documented workflow is supported by AutoCAD 2025 and 2026 help.
