A mahlstick—also spelled maulstick—is a hand rest that steadies your painting hand and keeps your wrist or fingers away from wet paint. Hold one end in your non-painting hand, rest its padded end on a stable easel edge or a completely dry part of the support, and lightly balance your working hand on the shaft. A straight dowel with a soft cork-and-chamois end is the simplest version to make.
What a mahlstick does
The stick creates a steady, movable bridge between your free hand and your painting hand. It is useful for small, precise marks, long edges, detail work and situations where touching the surface would smear paint. It can also act as a physical guide for straight or angled strokes.
It is not a brace to lean on. Excess pressure can shift the support, disturb a wet passage or make your hand tense. Kurt Schwarz, an oil painter and Art League instructor, describes the essential position this way: “In a nutshell, you want to keep your painting hand in the same position as when you are not in need of it and gently place it under your painting hand to steady it.”

Make a traditional padded mahlstick
Materials
- One straight, light wooden dowel long enough to extend beyond the painting
- A cork or small wooden cup to form the end
- A piece of chamois leather
- Cotton balls or other soft filling
- Cord, rubber bands or strong thread
- Wood glue
Creative Bloq’s basic construction uses a straight dowel, a cork ball, chamois and cord. Olivia Beaumont’s 2017 padded version specifies a 7/16-inch wooden dowel, a wooden candle cup, a 5 × 7-inch chamois, two rubber bands, four or five cotton balls and glue. Those dimensions describe her particular build, not a universal standard; choose a diameter that feels comfortable and a length that reaches past your work.
Assembly
- Inspect the dowel and reject any piece that is bowed, splintered or rough. A straight shaft makes the rest predictable.
- Glue the cork or wooden cup to one end and allow the adhesive to cure fully according to its instructions.
- Place the cotton on the chamois, center the padded end over it, and fold the leather around the end to make a soft ball.
- Secure the folded leather tightly with cord or rubber bands. Trim or tuck loose edges so nothing can drag through paint.
- Round or cover the opposite end if it is sharp. Test the stick over scrap material before bringing it to a finished painting.
A simpler, unpadded dowel can work when its end rests on the board supporting the paper rather than on the painted surface. Pastel artist Gail Sibley reports using a ¾-inch dowel this way and stresses that the stick must reach beyond the work.

Build a watercolour line guide
For flat paper, a right-angle guide can keep a bar at a repeatable height and help you paint a clean line. Grahame Booth’s example uses a 38 cm length of straight wood with a short dowel glued at right angles. The hole or spacing is set from the dimensions of the brush and ferrule, so copy the geometry of your own brush rather than treating 38 cm as a required size.
- Cut a straight bar longer than the line you expect to paint.
- Measure the brush ferrule and the desired gap above the paper.
- Glue a short dowel at a right angle in the position that gives that gap.
- With the bar supported, run the ferrule against its edge while moving the brush steadily.
Booth also describes a simplified alternative: attach a wine cork to a wooden school ruler. It is suitable for experimenting, but check that the cork cannot twist or mark damp paper.

How to use a mahlstick without smearing paint
- Secure the work. Tighten the easel or board so it cannot move when the stick touches it.
- Choose the contact point. Prefer an easel rail, canvas edge or support board. If the padded end must touch the artwork, use only an area that is certainly dry and keep the covering clean.
- Hold the free end. Grip it in the hand opposite the one holding the brush. This hand controls height, angle and position.
- Keep your normal painting posture. Do not reach around the stick or change your brush grip merely to use it.
- Set gentle contact. Place the shaft beneath the hand or wrist with only enough pressure to remove wobble. Your painting hand should still move freely.
- Move the guide, not the painting. For a straight stroke, position the shaft as a rail and move the brush along it. Lift and reposition it instead of dragging an unprotected end across the surface.
- Clear it after use. Hang or remove the stick so its padded end cannot fall onto wet paint.
Pressure and surface checks
- Use a fresh, dry covering on the contact end; dried paint or grit can scratch a panel.
- Do not rest on a passage that is merely tack-free. “Dry” should mean firm enough that light contact leaves no mark.
- On a flexible canvas, place the end on the frame or a rigid rail where possible; pressing into the fabric can make the surface bounce.
- When a pose causes shoulder or wrist strain, stop and reposition the easel rather than increasing pressure on the stick.
Choose the design for your setup
| Design | Useful when | Check before making or buying |
|---|---|---|
| Simple dowel or traditional padded stick | You want a portable hand rest and can reach an easel edge, support board or safe dry area | Straightness, comfortable diameter, reach beyond the work and a soft end suited to the contact surface |
| Right-angle watercolour guide | You paint lines on flat paper and want a repeatable guide height | Brush and ferrule geometry, the gap to the ruling edge and rigidity of the bar |
| Clamp-on support mahlstick | You want a frame-mounted rail that can stay over a canvas or panel | Frame thickness, clamp range, rail length and clearance for your hand |
Clamp-on systems
Buiko’s Support Mahlstick is a specialized example that locks under its own weight and allows height and angle adjustment. Its small clamps are described for side thicknesses of 6–25 mm and its large clamps for 15–40 mm. The rail is selected separately and is not included on the product page. Buiko gives about 6–9 cm as an average hand-to-rail working distance and says a rail equal to, or slightly longer than, the canvas diagonal is convenient in many cases. Treat those figures as that maker’s guidance, not a general mahlstick standard. Verify current fit, rail availability, price and shipping before ordering; the page contains conflicting 10-year and 15-year warranty statements.

The stick slips
Use a firmer easel edge, reduce pressure and move the contact point closer to the support. On a clamp-on model, recheck that the clamp range matches the frame thickness.

The padded end leaves a mark
Stop immediately, clean or replace the covering and move to a confirmed dry area or rigid edge. A soft material prevents hard scratches but does not make wet paint touch-safe.

Lines still wander
Lighten your grip, keep the ferrule or brush against the guide consistently and move from the arm rather than making a series of tiny wrist corrections. A right-angle watercolour guide may be more appropriate than a floating traditional stick for repeated lines.
Before the first finished painting
- Confirm the shaft is straight and smooth.
- Confirm the soft end is firmly attached and free of grit.
- Measure that the stick reaches beyond the support.
- Identify a stable, dry contact point before loading the brush.
- Practice the pressure and stroke on scrap material.
The Bottom Line
For most painters, a straight dowel with a securely padded cork or cup end is all that is needed: hold it with the non-painting hand, rest it on a stable or certainly dry point, and use feather-light contact under the painting hand. Choose a right-angle guide for repeatable watercolour lines or a compatible clamp-on rail when your frame and working distance justify the added hardware.
