At least three surviving Roman amphitheaters are documented by their official venues as hosts for modern events: Verona’s Arena di Verona, Croatia’s Pula Arena, and France’s Nîmes Amphitheater. The often-repeated claim that only four Roman amphitheaters remain in use worldwide is not established by a complete, authoritative inventory. “In use” also needs a definition: occasional concerts, opera, festivals, and visitor access are not the same as uninterrupted use for Roman spectacles.
What “still in use” means
A Roman amphitheater can be considered “in use” in several different senses: it may host contemporary performances, admit visitors as a monument, or retain a regular cultural program. Those categories should not be treated as proof of continuous theatrical or sporting use since antiquity.
The evidence available here supports modern event use at three named sites. It does not verify an exhaustive global total of four, and it does not establish a complete fourth entry.

| Amphitheater | Officially documented modern use | Visitor and evidence notes |
|---|---|---|
| Arena di Verona, Italy | Fondazione Arena di Verona describes the monument as an open-air opera theater and records more than a hundred editions of its Opera Festival. Visit Verona also says the arena continues to host performances and events. | The official foundation and tourism pages provide current institutional evidence for cultural use. |
| Pula Arena, Croatia | The arena’s official information lists numerous concerts and other events each year, including film, sports, and opera programs. | Event preparation can alter visitor access. The official visitor page publishes opening times and ticket information, so check it before travelling. |
| Nîmes Amphitheater, France | The official venue page promotes concerts, Roman Days, and other events. | Events can affect visitor arrangements; consult the venue’s current visitor information before arrival. |
Why the global count of four is not settled
“Only four” is an exhaustive claim. To substantiate it, a source would need to define the qualifying use, survey the surviving Roman amphitheaters worldwide, and document why every other candidate fails that definition. The evidence summarized here does none of those things.

A secondary search result repeats the four-site framing but does not provide a verifiable complete list. That is not enough to turn the number into an established fact. Arles, France, may appear in proposed lists, but no authoritative page in the available evidence verifies its current event use, so it should not be presented as a confirmed fourth example.
What about the Colosseum?
The claim that the Colosseum is “not one of them” cannot be explained from the available evidence. The cited material verifies event programming at Verona, Pula, and Nîmes, but it does not document a formal rule excluding Rome’s Colosseum or identify the reason for its exclusion.

It is therefore safer to say that the three venues above have verified contemporary event use, while the Colosseum’s status in any proposed four-site list remains unsubstantiated by these sources. Do not infer an explanation—such as conservation policy, safety, or a legal restriction—from the headline alone.
Planning a visit around an event
- Check the venue’s official calendar and visitor page immediately before travel.
- Expect entrances, opening hours, or accessible areas to change during rehearsals, construction, or performances.
- Buy event tickets and monument admission through the official venue or tourism service where possible; they may be separate products.
- Treat a modern concert or festival as a scheduled contemporary use, not evidence that Roman-era spectacles continued without interruption.
The defensible answer
Verona, Pula, and Nîmes are three Roman amphitheaters with official evidence of present-day opera, concerts, festivals, or other events. A worldwide total of exactly four—and a definitive reason for excluding the Colosseum—requires evidence beyond what is documented here.
