A mood board turns an idea for a painting project into a visual direction you can discuss before choosing colors, materials, or making detailed design decisions. Start with the project’s purpose and a few tone words, collect references that express them, then edit and arrange the board so someone else can understand the intended look.

What is a mood board?

A mood board is a physical or digital collection of references that communicates how a project should look and feel. For a painting project, it can bring together room or artwork imagery, color references, textures, materials, and short notes. It is a planning aid, not a finished painting or final design: the board helps make an abstract direction concrete enough to discuss and use during execution. Figma’s guide and Adobe Express’s guide describe this exploratory role.

How do I make a mood board?

  1. Clarify the brief

Write down what you are painting, who the work is for, and what the board needs to help you decide. Choose a small set of descriptive tone words—such as calm, sunlit, graphic, or weathered—and use them to judge whether each reference belongs. The words are a filter, not decoration. Figma recommends defining the goal and selecting words to set the tone.

  2. Choose a physical, digital, or hybrid format

Use a physical board if comparing actual paint, fabric, or other tactile samples is central to the decision. Choose a digital board if you expect frequent edits, remote sharing, or collaboration. You can also scan physical samples and add them to a digital layout; Adobe’s interior-design guidance describes this hybrid approach.

  3. Collect a range of relevant references

Gather imagery, color, texture, typography where relevant, and project-specific materials. Not every image has to depict the finished painting or room. A reference can contribute just its palette, lighting, era, texture, or composition. For an interior painting project, useful references might include room photographs, finishes, furniture, and paint or fabric swatches. Figma, Adobe, and Canva all describe combining visual references in a board.

  4. Find the common thread and edit

Look across the collection for repeated colors, shapes, textures, lighting, or moods. Remove references that are appealing on their own but pull away from the project’s direction. The goal is not to include everything you like; it is to make the intended visual story easier to see. Figma’s guide likewise advises noticing patterns as a direction takes shape.

  5. Arrange the board so the idea reads clearly

Make the central theme or most important reference easy to spot, group related items, and leave enough space for the collection to remain legible. A center-led layout is one possible starting point, not a rule. For interiors, you might group references by room, color, style, material, or product set. Adobe’s interior examples discuss organizing references by theme and project details.

  6. Add brief labels or notes

Explain what a reference contributes when that might not be obvious to another viewer: palette, surface, lighting, typography, or overall mood. For interior work, identify a relevant room, finish, color, or material when useful. Keep notes short so they clarify the visuals rather than compete with them. Canva and Figma include annotation as part of communicating a board’s direction.

  7. Share, get specific feedback, and revise

Ask collaborators or clients to respond to decisions—such as whether the palette feels too cool or whether a finish supports the desired mood—instead of asking only whether they like the board. Revise as the concept develops, then keep the board available as a reference while the painting or design is being carried out. Adobe Express and Figma describe sharing and refinement as part of the process.

  • Works with Latex Paint, Oil-Based Paint & Stains – Premium synthetic filaments hold more paint, reduce streaks, and provide a clean finish with latex paints, oil coatings, and wood stains.
  • Color: paint references or palette images that show the intended relationships and overall temperature.
  • Surface and texture: details that suggest a finish, material, or tactile quality.
  • Imagery: paintings, rooms, objects, landscapes, or other references that convey composition, light, or atmosphere.
  • Materials: actual paint, fabric, or finish samples for projects where physical comparison matters.
  • Words and labels: a few tone words and brief notes explaining what a reference is meant to communicate.

Typography can be useful for a project involving lettering or a broader visual identity, but it need not appear on every painting board. Likewise, physical samples are helpful when relevant, not a requirement for a digital board.

How do I organize a mood board?

Organize around the decision the board needs to support. Put the strongest expression of the direction where viewers will notice it, then group supporting references by a clear relationship—for example, palette, surface, room, or lighting. Use spacing and brief labels to distinguish ideas without making the layout busy. If two references suggest opposing directions, either remove one or make the contrast explicit so viewers can discuss the choice.

Which mood board format should I use?

Format Best suited to Trade-off
Physical Comparing real paint, fabric, or other tactile samples side by side. Editing and sharing may be less convenient than with a digital board.
Digital Frequent changes, remote collaboration, or easy distribution. It may not show the tactile qualities of physical materials as directly as the samples themselves.
Hybrid Projects that need real samples as well as a shareable, editable layout. Physical references may need to be scanned or photographed for the digital board.

The right choice depends on the project and how people need to review it. Digital services whose guidance covers mood-board creation include Figma/FigJam, Adobe Firefly Boards, Canva, and Wix Wixel; their features and availability can change. The available guidance describes capabilities, not an independent head-to-head ranking, so choose based on your need for a flexible canvas or templates, collaboration, editing, and project-specific labels rather than assuming one service is best.
