Print on demand lets you sell custom products without buying and storing finished inventory: a fulfillment provider makes and ships each item after a customer orders. You still need to choose a buyer and product, create or license the design, set up a sales channel, price for all costs, and bring customers to your listings.
How print on demand works
You list a product featuring your design. When a customer orders, the provider produces the item and ships it, while you manage the storefront and customer relationship. This avoids buying a batch of finished stock in advance, but production and shipping costs arise with each order, and the provider controls parts of fulfillment. Shopify describes the model; Printful explains its fulfillment workflow.
POD is a fulfillment method, not a built-in source of traffic or profit. You remain responsible for the product choice, listing, pricing, promotion, and customer service.

A practical path from idea to first listing

Choose a specific buyer and product
Start with an audience you can describe and a small range of products that fits its interests. A custom T-shirt is one straightforward example; other customizable products may suit a different design or audience. Compare options by production cost, shipping, available print area, and how well the product fits the artwork, not simply by how many items a provider offers. Printful’s catalog illustrates the range of product types a provider may support.

Create artwork and check your rights
Use a provider’s design tools or upload your own artwork, then position and scale it for the specific product and variants you intend to sell. Use work you own or have permission to use. A platform’s policy does not settle whether a particular slogan, image, character, logo, or brand use is lawful; consult qualified counsel if you need advice about a specific design. Etsy’s Intellectual Property Policy explains its process for infringement reports and notes that Etsy does not make legal determinations for sellers.

Choose a sales channel and connect fulfillment
You can sell through a marketplace such as Etsy or build a standalone store with a platform such as Shopify. Providers offer integrations for channels including both; integration can move product and order information, but you should verify that variants, shipping profiles, billing, and listing details are correctly configured in the destination store. Printful lists its integrations, and Shopify outlines the standalone-store model.

Make the listing clear and accurate
Check the title, description, tags, available sizes or other variants, images or mockups, shipping origin, and delivery expectations. Make sure the listing accurately describes how the item is made and where it ships from. If a production partner is involved, disclose that where the channel requires it.

Order a sample before expanding
Printful recommends sampling as part of its workflow. A sample lets you inspect the particular product, print placement, color, size, and packaging before you represent the item to customers. Provider guidance is not a substitute for checking your own product.

Understand billing before taking many orders
The customer pays through your store or marketplace, while the provider may charge you for production and shipping as it fulfills an order. Learn when those charges occur and how your channel pays out: you may need cash available to cover fulfillment before customer funds reach you. Printful explains its billing process.

How to price a print-on-demand product
Work from the exact product variant and destination rather than a generic catalog estimate. Separate the retail price paid by the customer from the provider’s production and shipping charges. Then account for marketplace or storefront costs, payment processing, discounts, refunds, applicable taxes, and marketing before deciding whether the offer is viable.
Printful’s displayed profit is retail price minus production price; that figure is not necessarily net business profit because other expenses may remain. Its pricing information distinguishes retail pricing from provider charges. The sources do not establish a universal ideal margin, so calculate your own costs and avoid treating a displayed provider estimate as guaranteed earnings.

Marketplace or independent store?
Neither channel is best for every seller. Compare the practical tradeoffs before committing:

What Etsy requires when a partner makes your product
Etsy allows qualifying products based on a seller’s original design to be made or printed by a third party. It requires sellers to disclose production partners and give accurate dispatch-location information. Etsy distinguishes seller-designed goods from generic ready-made items that the seller neither designed nor had customized by the buyer. Review Etsy’s current Creativity Standards and Seller Policy before publishing; its Creativity Standards were last updated June 10, 2025.
These requirements concern Etsy listings; do not assume another channel uses identical rules. Verify each channel’s current product and disclosure policies.
