On 12 September 1940, Marcel Ravidat returned to an opening near Montignac in southwestern France with Georges Agnel, Simon Coencas, and Jacques Marsal. Inside, they found the painted cave now known as Lascaux. The familiar story that a dog led them there is not confirmed by the French Ministry of Culture’s account, and the often-repeated age of 17,000 years differs from the official visitor site’s dating of more than 21,000 years.
How was Lascaux discovered?
Lascaux is in the Dordogne region of southwestern France, near Montignac. According to the French Ministry of Culture’s account, Marcel Ravidat first tried to explore an opening associated with a local legend about an underground passage, but did not have suitable tools. Four days later, on 12 September 1940, he came back with three friends: Georges Agnel, Simon Coencas, and Jacques Marsal.

The Ministry lists Ravidat as 17, Agnel as 16, and Coencas and Marsal as 15 at the time. Their exploration brought them into a cave decorated with prehistoric art. The Ministry’s discoverers page names all four boys.
Did a dog lead the boys into the cave?
The popular version says that Ravidat’s dog, Robot, fell into a hole and led him to the cave. The Ministry account consulted here describes an opening, Ravidat’s first attempt, and the group’s return; it does not confirm that the dog fell into the cave. The dog-led detail is therefore best treated as a familiar retelling, not an established part of the official account.

How old are the Lascaux paintings?
The title’s 17,000-year figure is not the date given by Lascaux’s official visitor site, which says the cave was painted more than 21,000 years ago. The figures should not be treated as interchangeable or as a settled precise date: the official site supplies the latter estimate, while the consulted material does not resolve the dating debate in greater detail. What did the boys find inside?
Lascaux is known for its extensive prehistoric cave paintings. In an overview of Lascaux and other decorated caves, the Ministry of Culture reports that an initial expert examination identified more than 500 units of parietal art, including an animal bestiary of 200 figures. Those are figures from that examination, not a newly verified current count; the overview does not provide a publication year for them. Can you visit the original cave today?
The original cave is protected, and public visits are offered through reproductions rather than by entering the original. The Ministry explains that visitable facsimiles let people experience decorated caves without damaging them. Lascaux’s visitor site describes two principal options:
