Dried fruit can give candle-inspired decor a warm, natural look, but it should not be placed in or near the flame or melt pool of a candle you plan to burn. For a fruit-accented wax project, choose an unlit display or a wickless wax sachet that is not meant to be burned or melted. The fruit’s decorative appeal is clear; the available guidance does not establish that it reliably scents a burning candle.
Can I add dried botanicals to candles?
Not to a candle intended to burn if the dried fruit could reach the flame or liquid wax. Dried citrus slices may look striking against wax, but dried fruit is flammable. Keep it in a display that stays unlit, or use it in a wickless decorative wax sachet that is not meant to be burned or melted.
The National Candle Association (NCA) describes its concern as flammable materials embedded in wax near a flame. As wax melts, those materials can enter the liquid pool and encounter heat and flame; wax coating the material may allow it to sustain a flame. The NCA’s Report on Botanical Candles says the association purchased several candles for testing under ASTM Candle Fire Safety Procedures at an independent third-party laboratory. Its accessible summary does not give a numerical sample size or readable test outcomes, so it does not support a specific count of failures.
CandleScience also cautions that dried botanicals may ignite if too close to a flame, move toward the wick with circulating wax, affect the melt pool, or clog the wick. A decorative outer wall is not, by itself, proof that fruit will remain safely away from the melt pool as the candle burns.

Choose a decorative format that stays unlit

CandleScience’s dried botanical wax project guidance describes wickless candles and wax sachets as alternatives to burning botanicals. For a fruit-accented project, the clearest fit is a wax sachet explicitly treated as decor—not as a candle to light or melt.
Make a dried-fruit wax sachet for display
- Choose the unlit format. Use a wickless wax sachet, not a candle you intend to burn. CandleScience lists dried fruit slices and silicone molds among possible sachet materials.
- Keep the use limitation clear. Label or store the finished piece as decorative and not for burning or melting. Do not add a wick or suggest that heating it is part of its use.
- Use fruit as a visible accent. Dried orange slices are one suitable decorative choice. Keep the finished sachet out of any flame path and away from heat sources.
- Set expectations about scent. A sachet may be a fragrant wax project, but the cited guidance does not establish a measured scent benefit from dried fruit itself. Do not promise that fruit will scent a burning candle.
Use ordinary candles according to their labels
For a candle made to burn, follow the manufacturer’s directions and safety label. The NCA’s Candle Labels 101 guidance names “Burn within sight” and “Keep away from combustibles” among its label rules, and advises keeping candles away from children and pets. Dried fruit is combustible, so keep it out of the candle’s flame path and away from the area where wax melts.
