One flower gave a synthetic dye its name; a battle gave that dye the name many people know today. The fuchsia’s path from botanical discovery to fuchsine and then magenta is a vivid example of how a plant’s appearance can inspire a color name—and how that name can later take a very different turn.

How the fuchsia entered botanical history

In 1696, French botanist Charles Plumier encountered a fuchsia shrub on Saint-Domingue, according to the Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle (MNHN). He published a description in 1703 under the name Fuchsia triphylla flore coccineo.

Plumier named the genus Fuchsia in honor of Leonhart Fuchs, a German physician and botanist who lived from 1501 to 1566. That botanical name set the stage for a later connection to a dye, but the color names did not arise all at once: the flower’s name, the dye’s first name and its later renaming belong to distinct steps in the story.

Why a synthetic dye was called fuchsine

In the 1850s, chemist François-Emmanuel Verguin developed a red-violet synthetic dye from aniline. Dye merchants known as the Renard brothers named it fuchsine, explicitly alluding to the vivid color of fuchsia flowers. The MNHN account traces that name to the brothers’ patent dated 8 April 1859.

The Ashmolean Museum’s account of the history of pink also describes the mid-nineteenth-century aniline-dye context and confirms the sequence from fuchsine to magenta: The Year of Pink.

How fuchsine became magenta

In 1859, new owners of the patent renamed the dye magenta, after the Battle of Magenta, fought on 4 June that year. The MNHN article by Solweig Mary, scientifically reviewed by Florence Tessier, states in translation: “The dye was however renamed ‘magenta’ the same year by the new owners of the patent, in reference to the Battle of Magenta on 4 June 1859.” The name’s immediate reference was the battle, not the flower.

Fuchsia is not one fixed shade

The flower connection is evocative, but it does not mean every fuchsia bloom is magenta. The MNHN says fuchsia flowers are most often pink, though they can range from orange through red to violet. Plumier’s first described fuchsia was orange, not magenta. A flower’s common name therefore cannot be treated as a precise color specification.

Why historical color names can mislead

Color words shift across time and contexts. The Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, notes that William Burchell’s early-nineteenth-century color chart used “Italian Pink” for yellow, a reminder that familiar labels do not always match their present-day meanings. Kew also explains that botanical color charts have helped describe specimens because collected plants lose color: Nature’s true colours (published 26 July 2019).

That history calls for care when tracing plant-inspired color names. In this well-documented case, the chain is specific: a genus named for Leonhart Fuchs, a dye named for the flower’s bright appearance, and a later dye name drawn from a battle. Other familiar color names may have botanical associations, but they need their own reliable evidence before they can be presented as established plant-derived names.
