The EEW Yarn Counter 2 estimates yarn length by counting rotations of its measuring disk. Its result depends on yarn thickness calibration and on yarn moving smoothly without slipping or missed rotations. It can tell you how much yarn passed through the counter; it cannot tell you by itself whether that amount is enough for a project.
What the EEW Yarn Counter measures
The counter detects rotations of its disk and calculates length from the disk’s known circumference. Yarn sitting around the disk slightly changes its effective diameter, so the device’s wraps-per-inch (WPI) setting makes a small adjustment for yarn thickness. WPI helps calibrate the length reading; it does not measure length on its own. Dreaming Robots’ product support describes the method and troubleshooting guidance.
The display reports yards or metres and can show a target-length alert. The manufacturer lists a maximum displayed length of 99,999.9 yards or metres. The counter also supports optional yarn-weight input, a one-button reset, and two AA batteries, which are required but not included. How to set it up for a more dependable reading
- Measure the yarn’s WPI. Use the included WPI card as directed in the EEW Yarn Counter user manual, then enter the closest available WPI value.
- Route the yarn so it grips the disk. Make sure it wraps fully around the disk and stays near its center. If it slips, add wraps; the manufacturer says very fine yarn above 80 WPI may need up to five.
- Keep the feed smooth. Jerky movement can affect the reading. Increase the distance between the yarn source, counter and destination to help absorb abrupt pulls; extra pegs or rings can help guide the path.
- Check the sensor if rotations seem to be missed. If fluff collects around the sensor, remove the disk and clear the area with a brush or compressed air, following the manufacturer’s support guidance.
For extremely fine yarn that still will not grip, Dreaming Robots lists lightly roughening the disk as a possible troubleshooting measure. Treat that as a last-resort fix rather than routine setup.
How accurate is the EEW Yarn Counter?
The Woolery’s retailer listing states a measurement accuracy of +/- 3%. That is a retailer-published specification, not a universal accuracy guarantee published in the manufacturer’s support material. Dreaming Robots instead explains that WPI calibration, grip, sensor cleanliness and smooth feeding affect the reading. The available documentation does not establish that every yarn and winding setup will fall within exactly 3%.

For a practical check, use a known length of yarn and the same WPI and feed arrangement you plan to use. Compare the displayed result with that reference, and correct the setup if the yarn slips or motion is jerky. This checks your particular arrangement; it does not replace a formal calibration specification.
What you can use the reading for—and what it cannot tell you
Dreaming Robots lists dividing yarn for socks or quilts, preparing lengths for plying, tracking yarn consumption and assisting with sectional warping among the counter’s uses. It measures the length that passes through it, which makes it useful for splitting a known supply or checking how much remains.

A length reading alone does not establish whether you have enough yarn to complete a project. Yardage needs depend on the pattern, gauge, yarn and finished dimensions. Compare the measured amount with the project’s stated requirement and allow for differences in gauge or construction.
Using it with an EEW Cone Winder
The EEW Cone Winder manual describes placing the counter before the tensioner or in place of it. With a link cable and a compatible EEW Cone Winder, the counter’s target-length function can stop winding at a chosen length. That setup is for the compatible equipment described in the manual, not a general promise that the counter will stop any winder.
