The “double-stitch” is usually called a saddle stitch or two-needle stitch: one length of thread has a needle at each end, and both needles pass through every hole from opposite sides. With evenly spaced holes and a consistent needle order, it makes a distinctive hand-sewn seam. The two-thread construction can also help a seam retain its integrity if one thread is cut, though that is a qualitative advantage, not a guarantee.

What you need for a hand-sewn saddle stitch

The essentials are two suitable needles and thread. Other tools make marking, piercing, or holding the leather easier, but you do not need every item in a full leathercraft setup.

  • Two needles and thread: Use a single length of thread with one needle attached to each end. Tandy Leather’s setup uses lightly waxed polyester thread.
  • Pricking iron and awl: A pricking iron marks the stitch positions and may cut into the surface; an awl opens or completes each hole.
  • Stitching groover or wing divider: A groover cuts a channel so stitches can sit flush. A wing divider can mark a straight stitch line without cutting a groove.
  • Stitching pony or clam: These hold the work steady while you sew. If you can hold the project securely in one hand, a clamp may not be necessary.
  • Optional finishing tools: A smooth-faced hammer or maul can tap the completed stitches into place. Needle-nose pliers can help pull a needle through a tight hole.

Mark the seam and prepare evenly spaced holes

  1. Mark the stitch line. Use a stitching groover for a recessed channel, or a wing divider to mark the line on the leather.
  2. Mark the stitch positions. Press a pricking iron along the line to create evenly spaced marks. In Tandy Leather’s method, the iron marks the positions and cuts into the first layer rather than piercing all the way through.
  3. Open each hole as you work. Use an awl to complete the holes, either before sewing or as you reach each stitch. The right hole size and spacing depend on the leather and project; there is no single specification that fits every piece.
  4. Secure the work if useful. A stitching pony or clam keeps the leather stable and leaves both hands free to guide the needles.

Sew the seam with two needles

Attach a needle to each end of one length of thread. Work one hole at a time, passing each needle through the same hole from opposite sides. Keep the sequence and thread crossing consistent from stitch to stitch.

  1. Pass the first needle through the prepared hole.
  2. Bring the second needle through that same hole from the opposite side. Guide it so it does not pierce or catch the thread already in the hole.
  3. Pull both ends snug, keeping the tension even so the stitch sits neatly without distorting the leather.
  4. Repeat for the next hole. A loop or cast in the thread path can produce a consistent zigzag appearance; use the same path each time.

If a needle resists, check that the hole is open enough and that the first thread is clear of the second needle’s path. Widening the hole gently with an awl or pulling the needle through with needle-nose pliers can help.

Backstitch and finish the thread ends

At the end of the seam, make two or three backstitches through the previous holes. Keep these stitches beneath the existing ones, without adding the loop or cast used for the main seam.

Finish according to the thread material. Tandy Leather describes trimming polyester close to the seam and carefully melting the end, taking care not to burn the leather. For linen or hemp, its method uses a small drop of glue worked in with a needle. Do not apply either finishing method indiscriminately to other thread types. If desired, tap the stitches gently with a smooth-faced hammer or maul to settle them into place.

How a saddle stitch differs from a machine lockstitch

A saddle stitch uses two thread ends that cross within each hole. Tandy Leather and Make: describe this construction as helping the seam retain integrity if one thread is cut. A machine lockstitch behaves differently: a broken stitch can compromise the seam. These are qualitative explanations, not results from a controlled comparison, and hand sewing takes more time than machine sewing.

Common problems and how to avoid them

  • Uneven stitches: Keep the holes evenly spaced and follow the same needle order and thread path throughout the seam.
  • Needle catches the opposing thread: Before pulling the second needle through, check that it is passing beside rather than through the first thread.
  • Loose or inconsistent tension: Pull both ends snug after each hole, using balanced pressure rather than yanking one side tight by itself.
  • Needles are difficult to pull through: Reopen the hole carefully with an awl or use needle-nose pliers to draw the needle through.
  • Leather is scorched during finishing: If using Tandy’s polyester method, melt only the thread end and keep the flame away from the leather.
