A bench pin is a small support mounted at the edge of a jeweler’s work area. It braces a piece close to the maker while they saw, file, drill, or perform other bench work. The right pin is the one that fits the work surface and supports the task—not necessarily the one with the most grooves or adjustments.
What a bench pin does
A bench pin gives small work a firm place to rest at the edge of the bench, bringing it close to the maker’s hands. Jewelers commonly use one while sawing, filing, and drilling. Depending on its shape, it can also support ring work and other operations. Rio Grande describes the pin as a central work surface for those tasks in its guide to jeweler’s workbench elements.

The familiar form is a wooden wedge fitted into a slot at the front of a jeweler’s bench. A clamp-on holder is an alternative when there is no slot. Pins may have a flat or angled top, a V-slot, or other cutouts; these shapes provide different ways to brace a piece.
Choose a mounting that fits your work surface
| Mounting style | How it attaches | Best fit | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bench-slot pin | A tang on the pin fits into a slot at the bench edge. | A jeweler’s bench with a compatible pin slot. | Compare the tang with the slot; the tang may need adjustment for a snug fit, as Rio Grande notes in its bench-element guide. |
| Clamp-on pin | A holder screws onto the table or bench edge and grips a wooden pin with a thumb screw. | A work surface without a pin slot, provided its edge suits the holder. | Confirm the holder fits the edge and that both the holder and pin are secure. This arrangement is described in Otto Frei’s screw-on bench-pin listing. |
Mounting descriptions establish the available approaches, but they do not set a universal stability test or performance threshold. Before using a saw or file, check that the mount suits the surface and the pin does not shift under the pressure you apply.

Match the pin’s surface to the task
A simple flat or angled surface is enough for many jobs. Some work surfaces are reversible, with a slanted side and a flat side, so the maker can turn the pin to suit the operation. Other pins have V-slots or additional cutouts. Rio Grande discusses reversible flat and angled surfaces, while Shor International’s bench-pin listings describe options for sawing, filing, drilling, and ring work.
- Flat surface: A general support for work that rests comfortably on a level top.
- Angled surface: A different working angle for tasks where a slanted support suits the maker’s position or the piece.
- V-slot or other cutout: A way to brace particular shapes; choose one only if it helps hold the work you do.
Think through four practical questions before choosing: Will the mount fit your bench or table? Does the surface support your usual workpiece and task? Can you secure it firmly? Do you need a fixed pin, or would an adjustable or specialized surface serve a particular operation better? These criteria follow from the mounting and use options described by Rio Grande, Otto Frei, Shor International, and Jayne Redman Jewelry.

Set up the pin before working
- Identify the mounting point. Use a bench-slot pin if your bench has a compatible slot; otherwise, consider an edge clamp suited to your table or bench.
- Check the fit. Seat a slot pin so its tang fits snugly. If it does not, follow the maker’s fitting guidance; Rio Grande notes that tang adjustment may be needed. For a clamp-on setup, check that the holder fits the edge and the pin is secured in the holder.
- Orient the working surface. Turn a reversible pin to its flat or angled face as appropriate, or position a cutout where it can support the piece.
- Test the support by hand. Place the work as you intend to use it and check that the pin and mount stay secure before applying a saw or file. The cited sources describe fit and mounting options but do not specify a standard test force.
Modify a pin only for a reason
Jewelry Manufacturing Arts Instructors at GIA describe how a maker can adapt a wedge-shaped pin to particular bench tasks. Their example pin measures 133 × 59 millimeters; the page does not state a publication date. The instructors note that preferences differ: some jewelers favor a flat piercing pin, while others prefer an angled working pin.
Their examples include an angled cut and three grooves for supporting rings during sawing or filing, along with a shallow stone tray and a depression for cutting lubricant. These are task-specific modifications, not a required checklist. GIA also notes that left-handed jewelers can mirror the positions and orientations of most of the modifications it describes. Use the task and your working direction to guide any changes rather than copying a layout automatically. See GIA’s Bench Tip on bench-pin modifications.
When a specialized pin makes sense
A fixed wooden pin is the straightforward choice for ordinary support. If you have a specific reason to change the surface angle or configuration during work, a rotational system may be worth considering. Jayne Redman Jewelry describes a rotational bench pin with interchangeable surfaces and standard, dovetail, and stationary mounting configurations. It is a specialized option, not a prerequisite for bench work; see the maker’s rotational bench-pin description.
