Glyphr Studio is a free, browser-based font editor aimed at type-design beginners and hobbyists. It can handle core projects involving Unicode glyphs, horizontal kerning and ligatures, but it is not a fit for every font workflow: its documented limits include no variable or color fonts, right-to-left or vertical fonts, or advanced OpenType features. Check those requirements before starting, and save the editable project as well as any exported font.

What Glyphr Studio is—and who it suits

Glyphr Studio describes itself as “The free & open source web-based font editor, made for hobbyists and typeface design beginners.” The app runs in a browser, requires no sign-up, and is listed at no cost on its official homepage. Its v2 build can also run locally without a back end, according to the Glyphr Studio 2 repository.

That makes it a reasonable starting point for drawing glyphs and building a straightforward font without installing a desktop editor. Version 2’s major workflow additions include editing multiple projects, copying and pasting between projects, and merging fonts. Version 1 is deprecated; new features are directed to v2, according to the Glyphr Studio 1 repository.

What you can make with it

Glyphs, Unicode and core typography

The editor supports editing characters across Unicode planes. You can search for and add named character ranges, or create custom ranges for private-use and supplementary characters. It also supports horizontal kerning and ligatures, according to the v2 feature support guide.

Where its feature set stops

Glyphr Studio’s documented unsupported areas are important if you are building a font for complex scripts or specialized typesetting. It does not support:

  • Color fonts or variable fonts.
  • Multiple masters or interpolation.
  • Right-to-left fonts, vertical fonts, or vertical kerning.
  • Contextual or stylistic alternates.
  • OpenType font features or variants beyond the documented ligature support.

In practice, this makes it a better match for a basic static font project than one requiring variable axes, color glyphs, right-to-left shaping, vertical writing, or richer OpenType behavior. The feature support guide is the reference for the current documented boundary.

Supported project and font files

Glyphr Studio v2 uses .gs2 project files, which are text files containing JSON data. The project retains editing information that a finished font cannot, so export is not a substitute for saving the project. The app’s import and export guide recommends keeping both.

File type Import Export Notes
.gs2 Yes Project file saved by the app Editable v2 project; stores JSON data.
Eligible v1 .txt project Yes No Accepted by the Open Project screen.
OTF Yes Yes Font import and export are documented.
TTF Yes Yes Font import and export are documented.
WOFF Yes Yes Font import and export are documented.
WOFF2 No Yes Convert to a supported format before importing.
SVG Font Yes Yes Deprecated font format; an ordinary SVG image is not an SVG Font.

These formats and qualifications are from the detailed import/export guide. Although the app’s Open Project screen lists WOFF2, the guide clarifies that WOFF2 export is supported but WOFF2 import is not.

What survives font export

Export converts the project into a font file, so some editor-specific structure does not carry over. Components are flattened, and kerning groups are expanded into individual pairs. Context glyphs, live previews, guides, overshoot, app and project preferences, path names, and glyph-range display data remain project-side information rather than font data, as described in the import/export guide.

For kerning, Glyphr Studio can import data from legacy kern tables and modern GPOS tables; exported kerning uses GPOS. Ligatures export in the GSUB liga feature, with source characters limited to the Basic Multilingual Plane (below U+FFFF). The guide also notes that ligature characters are not supported in kerning pairs. Those details matter if the exported font must preserve specific shaping behavior.

How to protect your work

Keep the project file and the exported font

  1. Save the editable project as a .gs2 file from Glyphr Studio.
  2. Export the font in the format your intended software or distribution workflow needs.
  3. Keep both files together. Use the project to continue editing; use the exported font to install, test, or distribute the current result.

Understand browser autosave

Autosave is enabled by default and stores each project’s latest changes in browser local storage. Saved projects can be restored from the Restore tab, or autosaving can be disabled in project settings. Local storage is browser-managed; the documentation does not establish it as a backup guarantee if browser data is cleared or storage is otherwise unavailable. Keep your own copy of the .gs2 file. See the Open Project documentation for the restore and autosave behavior.

Is Glyphr Studio the right choice?

  • Consider it if you want a no-cost, browser-based way to explore type design or make a relatively straightforward static font, and its documented Unicode, kerning, and ligature capabilities fit your needs.
  • Check the limits first if your source files are WOFF2, your project depends on advanced OpenType behavior, or you need variable, color, RTL, or vertical font support.
  • Plan to keep an editable copy if you expect to continue working on the typeface after exporting: the font file does not preserve all project information.

The app listing displayed v2.10.5 when checked, but that version label can change. Confirm the current listing at Glyphr Studio’s app page before relying on a particular build.
