A DIY paper TV is a handmade prop that changes its picture when you slide a drawn strip behind a paper screen or turn a storyboard scroll inside a cardboard frame. For a quick, small craft, use a flat cardstock frame with a sliding strip. For a larger build, fold a card body around two tubes and wind a storyboard between them. A third option—a screen cut into a large box—is a pretend-play frame, not a moving-picture TV.
Choose the kind of paper TV to make

The steps below explain the flat sliding-strip build first, then the larger scroll version. Use the open-box version if the goal is a play frame rather than changing drawn scenes.

Make the simple sliding-strip paper TV
Materials
- A printable TV template, if using one
- Cardstock, or ordinary paper mounted on cardstock for a sturdier frame
- Scissors and glue
- Colored pencils or markers
- Paper for the picture strip
- A printer if you are using the template
Steps
- Print the template, or draw a TV frame with a rectangular screen. If the template is on ordinary paper, glue it to cardstock so the frame holds its shape.
- Cut out the TV shape and the two guide slits shown by the template. Ask an adult to help with the slits if needed.
- Color and decorate the frame. Knobs, speakers and aerials can be drawn or added from scrap paper.
- Draw a sequence of scenes on a long paper strip, keeping the drawings in a row and sized to fit the screen opening.
- Feed the strip through the two slits so a scene sits behind the screen. Pull the strip gently to move to the next picture.
Keep the strip loose enough to slide, but wide enough that it does not slip out of the guides. Make a new strip for another story or episode.
Build a folded box TV with a turning storyboard
This version makes a sturdier, larger prop, but its template and assembly take more preparation. The National Museum of Australia’s activity uses a template printed across six A4 sheets, a large card piece about 60 x 90 cm, an A3 storyboard template and two cardboard tubes at least 33 cm long. It estimates 1–2 hours for the challenging project; that estimate is for the museum’s version, not every variation.

Materials and tools
- The museum’s TV template, printed on six A4 sheets, and its A3 storyboard template
- Card about 60 x 90 cm
- Two cardboard tubes at least 33 cm long
- Glue and clear or double-sided tape
- A pen for scoring fold lines
- A utility knife or box cutter, cutting mat and metal ruler
- Markers, paint or other optional decorations
Reused cardboard and tubes can work if they are large enough for the template and scroll. Keep knife and box-cutter work adult-led.
Assembly and scroll
- Print and arrange the TV template on the large card as directed. Cut out the body and screen openings using a ruler and cutting mat; an adult should handle the knife.
- Check that both tubes fit where the template places them. Score the fold lines with a pen before folding so the card bends neatly.
- Decorate the card while it is flat, then fold the body and tape it together as directed, leaving the back accessible for fitting the scroll.
- Draw a sequence of scenes on the storyboard strip. Attach one end to each tube with tape, keeping the strip aligned and taut across the screen area.
- Insert the tubes into the body, close the back, and turn one tube to advance the story. Turn the other to take up the loosened strip.
The museum describes its activity as making an episode of Play School with a box TV and a drawing of favourite toys or a story on a scroll. A simple original story works just as well for a homemade version.

Make a large box TV for pretend play
For a child-sized performance frame, use a large cardboard box and have an adult cut a screen opening. Paint the box and add bottle lids as optional knobs. Children can stand behind the opening, pretend to be on television, or put on a show with puppets, small toys or dolls. This open frame is a different project from the strip and scroll TVs: its screen does not advance through drawn scenes. A related how-to is available from Townsville City Council.

- Draw a channel name, controls or speaker holes directly on the frame.
- Use scrap card, household lids or leftover tubes for details rather than buying decorations.
- For a picture strip or scroll, plan scenes that read in order—such as a character arriving, finding something and heading home.
- Test the moving paper before adding extra decoration; glue or bulky embellishments near the guides or rollers can snag it.
This is a paper craft and pretend-play prop, not an electronic or functioning television: the pictures change because the maker moves the hand-drawn paper.
