The cardboard steam engine featured by Make: is a scale replica, not a documented working steam engine. If you want a model that actually runs on steam, AstroMedia sells a separate cardboard construction kit that uses a metal boiler and a closed steam path to keep heat and steam away from the cardboard.

What the Make: cardboard steam engine is
Gareth Branwyn’s Make: feature, published 27 May 2009, describes builders using Mr. McGroovy’s Box Rivets to make a “cardboard scale replica steam engine.” That establishes the build as a visual scale model. The feature does not provide full plans, dimensions, a complete materials list, or evidence that the replica generates steam or has a working mechanism.
That distinction matters when looking for instructions or a kit: the pictured replica is not the same project as a functional cardboard steam engine kit.

How the functional AstroMedia kit works
AstroMedia’s “The Steam Engine” is a separate pre-cut cardboard kit designed to operate using real steam. Five tea lights heat an aluminum boiler fitted with a magnetic pressure-relief valve. Steam travels through a closed hose-and-foil system and exits through a chimney. AstroMedia says this arrangement keeps steam away from the cardboard. The maker describes the engine’s power as modest.
The model measures approximately 29.7 × 21.2 × 22 cm when assembled, and AstroMedia estimates construction takes about 20–30 hours. These are product specifications from the manufacturer, not dimensions or build-time information for the Make: replica.

What comes in the box
AstroMedia lists printed and pre-cut construction card, aluminum sheet, galvanized mesh, a base plate, an aluminum boiler container, a foil glove, spring-steel crankshaft and axles, small plastic discs, silicone tubing, a ring magnet, washer, O-rings, foam seal, cotton buds, disposable syringes, cutting templates, and a construction manual.
Five tea lights, eight one-cent coins, and household aluminum foil are listed as not included. The instructions also call for a firm work surface, all-purpose adhesive, heat-resistant two-part adhesive, scissors suitable for aluminum, a ruler, thin wire or twine, and other household or craft tools.

AstroMedia’s kit is the documented option here for a working steam model. Exergia also lists a cardboard steam engine kit with a tea-light heat source, aluminum boiler, magnetic pressure-relief valve, galvanized wire guard, and closed hose-and-foil system. Its listing showed €45.00 including VAT when retrieved on 3 October 2026; price and stock can change, so check the retailer’s current listing before buying. That retailer price does not establish what the Make: replica costs or whether it is available as a kit.
Safety when operating a real-steam model
AstroMedia states that steam reaches 100°C. Its instructions call for adult supervision for children under 14 and warn against unsupervised use by children. During operation, the model uses open flames and hot components.
