Make a spider bun with four black chenille stems, a pom-pom face and two googly eyes. The standard style puts one spider on a bun; if your hair is easier to gather into pigtails, you can make two smaller braided buns and decorate each one.
What you’ll need
- Four black chenille stems (pipe cleaners)
- One black pom-pom, about 1.5–2 inches wide
- Two small googly eyes
- A small piece of black felt
- One bobby pin or hairpin
- Craft glue or another strong adhesive
- A hair elastic and extra bobby pins for securing the bun
The pom-pom size comes from Play Party Game’s tutorial, updated August 11, 2026; the other supplies are listed in its instructions and the Simple as That tutorial.
How to make the spider bun
- Make a bun. Gather the hair with an elastic and secure it in a bun. A high bun is one option, but the tutorial instructions do not require a particular height.
- Prepare the spider’s base. Cut a small circle from black felt. Slide a bobby pin through the center so the felt rests against the pin.
- Attach the face. Glue the black pom-pom onto the felt, covering the pin. Let the glue set, then attach two googly eyes to the front of the pom-pom.
- Make eight legs. Cut each of the four chenille stems in half. Bend every piece near the top and again near the tip to give it an angled foot.
- Arrange the spider. Place four legs on each side of the bun, then slide the pinned pom-pom face into the center.
Adapt the style for pigtails
If your hair is better suited to pigtails than one bun, One Creative Mommy’s variation makes a bun from each pigtail and adds a spider to each.

- Divide each pigtail into sections and braid them.
- Wrap the braids around the hair ties to form buns, then pin them in place.
- Make two spider decorations using the felt, pom-poms, eyes and chenille stems. Let the glue dry before putting the decorations in your hair.
This variation uses two smaller bun bases; the tutorials do not establish that either arrangement lasts longer or works better.
