Paul Johnson’s “no-fold” pop-ups are a named part of his paper-engineering practice: Routledge’s 2013 guide New Pop-Up Paper Projects includes a chapter titled “Pop-ups without folds.” The label identifies one approach within a wider field of movable-book design; it does not mean that every pop-up book is made this way, and the available descriptions do not establish a specific construction method.
What are pop-ups without folds?
Routledge uses “pop-ups without folds” as the name of a section in Johnson’s New Pop-Up Paper Projects: Step-by-step paper engineering for all ages. Johnson’s brief statement, attributed in an indexed Movable Book Society interview result, is: “My pop-ups have no folds.” The interview excerpt also says that he plans engineering on drawing paper and cuts it out as templates.
Those descriptions support treating “no-fold” as a category in Johnson’s practice, but they do not explain a complete mechanism or set out the construction of a particular book. The phrase should not be taken to establish that a project has no cuts, joins, supports, or other structural elements.

Where the technique fits in Johnson’s work
Johnson’s 2013 guide presents paper engineering as a broad craft rather than a single mechanism. Routledge describes it as covering 90-, 180-, and 360-degree engineering, alongside more than 150 techniques and ideas connected to more than 200 cross-curricular themes. Those counts are the publisher’s description of the book, not an independent tally.
The contents place “Pop-ups without folds” among other subjects, including paper mechanics, storybooks, movable forms, and toy theatres. The publisher’s 90-, 180-, and 360-degree categories describe different orientations of engineered work; they are not a ranking, nor do they define what makes a pop-up “no-fold.”

A guide designed for teaching and making
New Pop-Up Paper Projects is presented by Routledge as an illustrated, step-by-step guide to paper engineering. Its broader teaching material includes color diagrams and photographs, foundation skills, and project ideas such as cityscapes and magical creatures. It also covers mechanisms including pulleys, wheels, and levers. These examples show the range of the book; they should not be assumed to describe every no-fold project.
The publisher also highlights classroom planning and health-and-safety advice, and identifies parents and classroom teachers among the intended audience. That makes the book useful as a teaching resource as well as an introduction to movable-paper construction, while leaving the specific no-fold method less fully described in the available excerpts.

How the 2013 guide relates to Johnson’s earlier book
Johnson’s Pop-up Paper Engineering: Cross-curricular Activities in Design Technology, English and Art was published by Routledge in 1992. Its publisher description emphasizes practical lessons arranged as 90-degree and 180-degree workshops, and explains how pop-up forms can enrich English and art study. This offers a view of the teaching focus in his earlier work; it does not establish whether that book includes no-fold examples.

The short statement “My pop-ups have no folds” is attributed to Johnson in an indexed result for a 2021 Movable Book Society interview; the PDF itself was not retrievable, so the excerpt supports only the wording quoted here and its limited template-related context.
