To make a custom gaming miniature, plan its role, scale and silhouette first; sculpt the major forms before adding fine details; prepare the model in a slicer; then choose resin for small, detailed characters or FDM for larger, less-detailed pieces and terrain. After printing, follow the material maker’s instructions for cleanup, then prime and paint if you want a finished tabletop piece.
What you need to design and print a miniature
- A clear idea of the miniature’s game role, approximate height and base footprint.
- A sketch and digital modeling or sculpting software. Examples include Blender, Fusion 360, Sculptris and ZBrush; these are options, not a ranked list. Formlabs describes ZBrush as a digital sculpting tool used for realistic figurines.
- A 3D printer, compatible material and slicing software. The slicer prepares the model for the printer.
- A suitable workspace and, for resin printing, a way to clean and cure the print.
- Optional finishing supplies such as sanding tools, primer, miniature paints and a protective topcoat.
Formlabs’ 2023 guide and 3DSourced’s 2023 guide describe the basic workflow, but neither establishes a current independent ranking of consumer printers or sculpting software.
Plan the miniature before sculpting
Choose its job and physical size
Decide whether you are making a player character, creature, vehicle, objective marker or piece of scenery. Set an approximate height and base footprint before modeling. Those dimensions determine how much detail the finished print can show and help you avoid designing features that disappear at tabletop scale.
Make the pose and silhouette readable
Sketch the figure from a useful view before opening modeling software. Keep the pose recognizable at a glance and prioritize the shapes that communicate the character or unit: its stance, outline, equipment or distinctive weapon. A sketch also gives you a proportion reference as the model develops.

Sculpt from large forms to small details
Block in the main shapes
Build the pose and largest forms first, then refine their proportions and connections. For an organic character, digital sculpting tools are a natural fit; for more geometric objects, a modeling workflow may suit the design. The software examples above are starting points, not a guarantee that any one tool is best for every project.
Add only details that can survive the chosen scale
Once the main forms read clearly, add clothing, armor, gear, weapons and a base. Fine details that are too small for the selected print process and physical size may not carry through into the print. Give important features enough visual prominence to remain legible after printing and painting.

Prepare the model for printing
Export and inspect the file in a slicer
Export a model file that your slicer can load. STL is the handoff format suggested by the cited 3DSourced guide; confirm that your chosen slicer and printer support the file you export. In the slicer, check the model’s dimensions and orientation, inspect overhangs and supports, and make sure the model fits the build area.

Prepare the sliced file with settings appropriate to the printer, material and software you are using. Layer height and exposure are not universal values: resin, machine and slicer settings vary, so use the relevant manufacturer guidance rather than copying a generic recipe.

Choose resin or FDM for the job
The practical choice depends on how much detail the miniature needs, how large it is, the budget for equipment and materials, and whether you are willing to clean and cure resin prints.

Print, clean and finish the miniature
Follow the material’s handling instructions
Print the prepared model with the compatible material. For resin, remove supports carefully, clean the print and cure it before normal handling. A wash-and-cure station can make the workflow more convenient, but it is optional: the cited guide also describes manual cleaning with isopropyl alcohol and containers, followed by curing. Follow the resin and printer manufacturer’s instructions for handling and disposal; the cited guides do not provide a complete current safety standard.
Decide whether to paint it
After the print is ready, sanding can help address surface marks, particularly where FDM supports were removed. Primer, miniature paints and a protective topcoat are optional finishing supplies rather than requirements for printing. If you paint, use the primer and paint approach appropriate to the material and desired finish.

Check design rights before sharing or selling
Use your own work or check the terms for any source model, reference or design service you rely on. Franchise-inspired characters can raise copyright or trademark questions, and selling a print adds commercial-use considerations; the 3DSourced guide flags these as issues to check, not as jurisdiction-specific legal advice. Hero Forge describes a platform for designing and ordering custom miniatures, while its search-indexed support archive says its models are not commercially licensed for other projects. Confirm the service’s current terms directly before relying on that statement.
