The easiest way to give a porch light a Halloween look is to replace its bulb with a compatible orange LED bulb. The color becomes the display’s focal point; a lantern, flickering lights, or a little spiderwebbing can add atmosphere without requiring a full porch makeover.
Start with an orange LED bulb
Switching the existing bulb is the simplest version of the project. In The Home Depot’s Halloween porch feature, DIY creator Brooke Cribbs describes swapping the porch lights for orange LED bulbs. The orange glow gives the entry a seasonal color cue while keeping the main change straightforward and reversible.
Before buying a bulb, check its base against the fixture, and read both the bulb and fixture instructions. Confirm that the bulb is suitable for the fixture and its location, and check any dimmer limitations. There is no single bulb recommendation that fits every porch light.

Layer in a few optional Halloween details
The light can stand on its own, or you can add a small number of accents nearby so the orange glow feels intentional. Cribbs’s porch included lanterns with flickering tea lights, skulls, spiderwebbing, and suspended skulls. These are ideas to adapt, not a required shopping list.
- Lantern: Set a lantern near the entrance and use battery-operated flickering LED tea lights for a small pool of light.
- Skulls: Place a decorative skull in or beside a lantern, or use a few as accents around the porch.
- Spiderwebbing: Use it sparingly around nearby decor to frame the light rather than obscure the fixture.
Keep decorations clear of the bulb and fixture. Do not wrap fabric, paper, or other material around a lit fixture; follow the fixture and bulb instructions for clearance and use.

Make a skeleton lantern as a separate focal point
If you want a craft rather than another change to the porch light, Oriental Trading’s skeleton lantern tutorial offers a compact alternative: remove the glass from a black metal lantern, place a Halloween skull or skeleton inside, and secure it with hot glue. The tutorial estimates 30 to 40 minutes for that lantern craft. That estimate applies to the lantern, not to changing a porch bulb; lantern designs and adhesives can vary, so follow their instructions.

Keep project estimates in context
Time and cost figures for other porch crafts are not estimates for this light project. Oriental Trading’s 30-to-40-minute figure is for its skeleton lantern. Crystel Montenegro Home reports about 20 minutes and about $40 per ghost for a separate tomato-cage ghost project, not for changing a porch bulb or decorating a lantern.
