From blue-and-white book covers to furniture made with salvaged architectural fragments, five cultural references offer ways to bring memory, texture and warmth into contemporary spaces. They span publishing, textiles, fashion, film and furniture—not a measured trend report, but a set of distinct ideas to notice, collect and interpret.
1. Fitzcarraldo Editions’ blue-and-white books
Founded in Peckham in 2014, Fitzcarraldo Editions publishes contemporary and experimental fiction. Its stark blue-and-white covers are instantly recognizable, turning a book jacket into a small study in contrast, repetition and restraint. Olga Tokarczuk’s Flights, Annie Ernaux’s The Years and Vincenzo Latronico’s Perfection are among the publisher’s notable titles, as described by Livingetc.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →For a painter, the covers suggest a useful exercise: limit a composition to two strong colors and a clear typographic or geometric anchor. Perfection also offers a narrative prompt: it follows an expat couple confronting the gap between an apparently ideal life in Berlin and their lived experience. Consider how a polished surface can hint at something unsettled beneath it.

2. Yumo Yuan’s woven textiles and “soft newstalgia”
Livingetc reports that London design gallery Spazio Leone is scheduled to present Yumo Yuan’s first solo exhibition from October 9 to 24, 2026. Yuan’s described process begins with hand-painted, pastel, nature-inspired motifs on silk warps, which are then woven into textiles. The work draws on antique Chinese folk art and is shown alongside vintage objects, garments and interventions on reclaimed furniture.
The sequence matters: painted marks become part of a woven structure rather than remaining on a flat surface. That interplay of image, material and inherited reference offers painters a way to think beyond the canvas—how a motif changes when it is repeated, interrupted or embedded in a different material. The phrase “soft newstalgia” captures the gentle, memory-minded sensibility Livingetc attributes to the work.

3. Spring/Summer 2027 fashion’s softer shapes
Gilda Bruno’s reading of the Spring/Summer 2027 runway collections is a move toward comfort: voluminous, nonchalant silhouettes, layered clothing, considered patterns and softly vibrant or mismatched colors. Bows, ribbons, veils, fringe and frills contribute to a more romantic mood. This is an editorial interpretation of the collections, not a quantified industry consensus.

For color work, the useful idea is not simply “softness,” but the tension between abundance and ease: generous shapes paired with playful details, or tones that sit together without matching exactly. Bruno’s line, “This time, at least, there won’t be any need to squeeze your stomach in,” is her fashion commentary, not an external expert quotation.
4. Verity and mid-century production design
Michael Showalter’s film Verity, based on Colleen Hoover’s 2019 novel, stars Anne Hathaway and Dakota Johnson in central roles. Livingetc points to a mid-century modern home in Armonk and a tactile office set as part of the film’s visual appeal. Those settings make production design—not only plot or performance—a source of atmosphere: period architecture, furnishings and surface texture can shape how a story feels.

5. Rafael Prieto’s The Future of the Past
At Emma Scully Gallery in New York, Rafael Prieto’s The Future of the Past is described as combining color-blocked painted-wood furniture with architectural fragments salvaged from a Tribeca demolition. In this work, building remnants do not remain detached artifacts: they enter new furniture and sculptural forms, carrying the marks of an earlier place into a different context.

That transformation offers painters a material question to borrow: what changes when an old surface is framed, repainted or placed beside something newly made? The source does not give exhibition dates, so check with the gallery for current status before visiting.
