For a bathroom that feels like it belongs to a particular family, hand-drawn tiles can do more than add pattern: they can carry a story in the room itself. Recent examples range from a few illustrated accents to a bespoke mosaic floor, with imagery drawn from a home’s character, a garden or a family’s heritage.
What makes story-led bathroom tile different?
The defining feature is not simply a decorative repeat. It is imagery with personal meaning: a bird from a native garden, a birth flower, an anniversary date or a motif tied to a family’s history. Each tile can work like a small illustration, while a group of tiles can build a larger narrative.
In a feature published by Livingetc on 3 October 2026, maker Petra of House of Petra described interest in objects with personal meaning: “There is this lovely movement towards filling our spaces with things that actually hold memory and meaning, and tiles are such an enduring way to do that,” she said. That is a practitioner’s observation, not a measured claim about how widely the look is being adopted.

Three ways to put a story into a bathroom
A few illustrated accents: a cowboy story
Interior designer Callie Windle worked with Such Stories on commissioned cowboy tiles for her son’s bathroom in a late-1960s ranch-style home. The western imagery suited the house’s mid-century American character and was chosen to encourage her son’s imagination. Rather than cover every surface with illustrations, Windle used the tiles sparingly among blue tiles and carried the theme onto watercolor-painted sconce shades.
The example shows how a small number of illustrated tiles can become a focal point without making every finish compete for attention. Windle’s advice was personal rather than prescriptive: “I suggest following your heart; choose to tell a story that means something to you, that will bring you joy every time you step into the bath.”

A coordinated collection: botanicals in a shower niche
In a Californian bungalow, designer Whitney Soloman used hand-painted tiles with fine blue botanical motifs in a shower niche. The tiles are identified as a Tiles of Ezra collection; the rest of the room was kept neutral so the detailed pattern could lead. This approach suits someone who wants a clear visual theme but does not need every tile to be individually commissioned.
A larger custom mosaic: family heritage underfoot
For a Fitzrovia home, mosaic artist Amy Exton created a bathroom floor inspired by the ancient Roman “Unswept Floor” motif. The clients’ multicultural heritage informed its imagery: a Bulgarian rose, French lavender and Californian sequoia leaf. Exton described the process as collaborative: “I work really closely with my clients to get a good idea of what they’d like included in a design,” she said.

A full-floor mosaic makes the story a major part of the room’s identity. In this example, the narrative comes from the clients’ own connections rather than a generic decorative theme.
Choose the scale and degree of personalization
The examples suggest three distinct routes. A ready collection offers a defined motif with less individual input; a handful of commissioned tiles can add a bespoke focal point; and a custom mosaic can make a larger surface carry a detailed, shared story.

| Approach | Personalization | Scale shown in the examples | Design effect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ready collection | Choose from an existing motif; individual customization is not established in the feature. | Shower niche | Pattern leads while surrounding finishes remain restrained. |
| Commissioned illustrated tiles | Imagery can be shaped around a particular person, room or theme. | A few accent tiles among blue tile | A focused story detail that can connect to other accents, such as painted sconce shades. |
| Bespoke mosaic | Collaborate on imagery tied to a client’s story. | Bathroom floor | The narrative becomes a prominent part of the room. |
These are differences in approach, not a ranking. A niche may be enough for a personal detail; a larger custom work makes more sense when the story is meant to shape the whole room.

Detailed illustrations already bring color and visual information into a bathroom. A restrained surrounding palette can give them room to read clearly, as in Soloman’s neutral scheme. Windle’s bathroom offers another option: repeat the theme selectively in an accessory, while using blue tiles as the broader setting.

Before choosing colors and finishes, decide what the image should do. If it is the focal point, simpler neighboring surfaces can help. If the story is spread across several details, repeat a color or motif carefully rather than introducing unrelated patterns that compete with it.
Consider the permanence before commissioning
Tile is a more lasting choice than a shower curtain or artwork. Windle explicitly described it as more of a commitment, while valuing its place in the home over time. Petra made a similar point about fired ceramic: “Tiles are brilliant for this because of their sheer permanence. Paint gets rolled over and wallpaper peels, but fired ceramic becomes part of the actual fabric of the building. It is there for generations, like a little archival stamp of your family.”
That permanence is part of the appeal, but it changes the decision. Choose imagery you expect to enjoy living with, and decide how much of the room should carry it. A few accents keep the story concentrated; a full mosaic gives it much greater presence. The feature identifies Such Stories, House of Petra, Tiles of Ezra and Amy Exton in connection with these examples, but does not establish current commission availability, prices or product stock.
Quick Recap
Questions to settle before choosing a design
- What is the story? Start with a person, place, memory, family connection or motif that has real meaning to you.
- Where should it appear? A niche, a small group of accent tiles and a floor create very different levels of visual emphasis.
- How much should be custom? A collection provides an existing design; a commission or bespoke mosaic allows the imagery to be developed around a specific story.
- What should stay quiet? Consider whether a restrained palette or a few coordinated accents will let the illustrations remain legible.
- Will you want to live with it for years? Treat permanent tile as a considered design decision, not a temporary way to try out a motif.
