MIT’s Edgerton Center K–12 Maker Lab is a free online hub where teachers can find project tutorials, browse an Idea Gallery, plan lessons with a Maker Methodology, and access educator training. You do not need a full makerspace to begin: choose a project that fits your students, available materials, time, and safety capacity.

What the MIT K–12 Maker Lab offers

The MIT Edgerton Center frames making as hands-on, meaningful project learning that can be used in any subject. Its About page describes the goal as building durable skills—including persistence, critical thinking, self-direction, collaboration, creativity, and problem-solving—alongside technical literacy. The project is not simply to fabricate an object: students also make decisions, test ideas, and learn from mistakes.

Plan an open-ended maker lesson

For a teacher-designed project, MIT’s Maker Methodology turns an idea into a workable plan. It encourages teachers to set learning goals and constraints first, investigate existing approaches, outline the project, plan activities and resources for each stage, and schedule the work.

  1. Define the learning goal and constraints. Decide what students should learn or practice, along with limits such as time, materials, classroom space, and safety.
  2. Research workable approaches. Find examples or techniques that can help students move toward the goal without prescribing every design choice.
  3. Outline the project. Break the work into stages students can understand, from the initial idea through making, testing, and revision.
  4. Plan activities and resources. Identify what students and teachers will do at each stage and what tools, materials, instruction, or supervision are needed.
  5. Make a schedule. Set a realistic pace for instruction, building, testing, and iteration within the available class time.

The methodology also supports a shift in classroom roles: students can learn a new technology themselves and share what they learn with classmates while working within project requirements. This can create room for student agency without leaving the project’s learning goals or constraints undefined.

Start without a full makerspace

A dedicated makerspace is not a prerequisite for a maker project. Begin with the learning goal, then consider the tools and materials already available and what the project genuinely requires. MIT notes that tools are only one part of maker culture, while identifying technologies such as 3D printers, CAD software, and microcomputers like Arduino as more accessible than they once were. Its Maker Skills Workshops page also lists electronics, laser cutters, and hand tools.

  • Use a tutorial that matches equipment and materials you can access.
  • Choose equipment only when it serves the learning goal, rather than treating a tool purchase as the starting point.
  • Account for student readiness, instruction, supervision, and safety before introducing unfamiliar tools.
  • If exploring a microcomputer project, “Arduino starter kit” is a practical search phrase, not an MIT endorsement. Check the specific kit’s age guidance, electrical safety information, documentation, and current availability.

Tool access alone does not make an activity a strong maker lesson. The project should give students opportunities to think critically, collaborate, make choices, revise an idea, and learn from what does not work.
