Yes—the September 2026 jobs report made an October Federal Reserve rate hike look less likely, but it did not rule one out. U.S. payrolls rose by 29,000, unemployment was 4.2%, and revisions lowered July and August payroll totals by a combined 60,000. Interest-rate futures pricing shifted toward a hold after the report; that was a market expectation at the time, not an FOMC decision.
What did the September jobs report show?
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) said nonfarm payroll employment increased by 29,000 in September 2026 and unemployment was 4.2%. The agency described both measures as having “changed little.” The report points to subdued hiring, not a collapse across the labor market.
The revisions also weakened the recent picture: BLS lowered July payroll growth by 31,000 and August by 29,000, a combined downward revision of 60,000 to those two months’ totals. That is a revision to earlier estimates, not 60,000 jobs lost in September. Over the preceding 12 months, payrolls had averaged a monthly gain of 45,000.
Some industries still added jobs
Major industries showed little change overall in September, though health care added 17,000 jobs, construction 11,000, and manufacturing 9,000, according to BLS. Those gains help put the weak headline in context: hiring was soft overall, but not every sector was shrinking.

Wages continued to rise
Average hourly earnings rose five cents, or 0.1%, in September and were up 3.0% over the year, BLS reported. Payroll growth and unemployment are only part of the Fed’s assessment; wage and price pressures matter too.
How did markets react to the report?
Two October 2, 2026 reports captured market pricing shortly after the release. Reuters said interest-rate futures implied less than a one-in-five chance of an October hike. Realtor.com, citing CME FedWatch, reported an 85% probability of the federal funds rate holding steady immediately after the release, compared with 75% the previous day.

These are distinct, time-sensitive snapshots from different reports—not official Fed forecasts and not interchangeable measures. Market-implied odds can move as new data and commentary arrive, so neither figure should be treated as current beyond its stated reporting moment.

No. Market pricing indicates what traders expected at a particular moment; it does not announce what the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) will do. The jobs report shifted expectations toward a hold, but it did not settle the decision.

The Fed’s September 2026 projections were based on information available at its September 15–16 meeting and reflected each participant’s own assessment of appropriate policy. They are not promises or forecasts of the likeliest rate outcome. The Board of Governors cautioned: “Considerable uncertainty attends these projections, however.”
Why can inflation still affect the October rate decision?
The Fed weighs employment alongside its price-stability mandate. A softer jobs report can reduce pressure to raise rates to cool demand, but the employment data alone cannot determine the policy choice if inflation remains a concern.

As earlier context—not a reaction to the September jobs report—New York Fed President John Williams said in a July 2026 speech that unemployment had remained in a narrow range around 4¼% to 4½% over the preceding year and described inflation as about 4%, above the FOMC’s 2% longer-run goal. Those remarks predated the report and should not be read as a statement about the October decision.

- New labor data: The next BLS Employment Situation release, covering October 2026, was scheduled for November 6, 2026. That release would arrive after October, so it cannot be treated as data available to the committee beforehand.
- Inflation evidence: Price developments remain relevant because the Fed’s employment and price-stability objectives both inform policy.
- Market repricing: Any quoted odds describe a particular moment and may change before the meeting; they are not a substitute for the FOMC announcement.
