The strongest interior design directions for 2027 favor rooms that feel personal, comfortable, and lived in—not copied from a single look. A designer-led forecast from Homes & Gardens, published October 2, 2026, highlights ten ideas, from analogue corners and layered color to relaxed kitchens and vintage finds. Treat them as inspiration, not a checklist: the examples show ways to shape a home around how you live.

What ties the 2027 interior design trends together?

Across the forecast, character comes from use, texture, and personal choices. Color appears in several distinct ways—through tonal layering, pale greens, and painted storage—while kitchens are treated as social rooms and furniture is chosen for comfort as much as appearance.

The list is based on designer commentary and project examples, not measured consumer adoption. Sherwin-Williams offers a separate color forecast called Rewild, with 48 handpicked colors arranged into Revive, Reignite, and Reconnect. The company describes those colors as inspiration rather than a prescribed palette; its forecast is a paint-industry perspective, not independent evidence that a particular shade will become common.

1. Make room for analogue leisure

A low-tech space can be a whole game room, but it can just as easily be a reading chair, puzzle table, or small corner set aside for chess, art, or board games. In one example, the room is organized around the homeowner’s board-game collection and the way they host. Start with the activity and the people who will use the space, then choose a comfortable seat, useful lighting, and accessible storage.

A dedicated nook can answer a request to “do a puzzle, read a book or play a game of chess” without requiring a spare room. Keep the setup easy to use; a leisure area that is awkward to reach or must be cleared constantly is less likely to become part of daily life.

2. Build layered, tonal color schemes

Rather than relying on one flat finish, combine several shades of the same color and vary the surfaces and textures. Hue-drenching and color capping are two approaches named in the forecast. Brown grasscloth walls paired with a mohair sofa show how a tonal scheme can gain depth from material contrast as well as shifts in shade.

For a room that feels cohesive without becoming visually monotonous, consider how the wall finish, upholstery, trim, and accessories catch light differently. Tonal does not have to mean a single exact color or an overwhelming amount of it: use a narrower shade range or quieter texture if you want a subtler effect.

3. Give the pantry a designed role

A pantry can be a visible part of a kitchen’s character instead of storage hidden from view. The forecast points to examples such as a glass-fronted pantry painted in color or a compact pantry tucked beneath a staircase. In one project, the pantry adds contrast to an otherwise neutral kitchen.

Choose an approach that suits the footprint and what you store. Glass fronts make contents part of the room’s appearance, while a tucked-away pantry can make use of an awkward or underused area. If the pantry is on display, plan its shelves and containers as well as its paint color.

4. Try pale green as a quiet neutral

Sage, mint, and celadon are presented as gentle alternatives to plain white and familiar neutrals. A nuanced pale green can recede rather than dominate, and it can work alongside smoky or richer brown wood finishes.

This is a color direction, not a universal replacement for white. Test how a particular green reads with the room’s light, flooring, wood, and adjoining spaces before committing; the forecast does not establish one shade as right for every home.

5. Make the kitchen comfortable for more than cooking

These kitchens are places to cook, sit, talk, and manage everyday activities. Soft seating, curtains, table linens, favorite china, and glassware can make the room feel as considered as the rest of the home. As Emma Sims Hilditch, founder and creative director of Sims Hilditch, puts it: “The kitchen should feel as decorated and as considered as the other rooms in the house.”

Plan around how the household actually shares the room: one person might cook while another chats or helps children with homework. Where space allows, seating can support lingering; in a smaller kitchen, textiles and well-chosen everyday objects can bring warmth without adding a gathering area.

6. Use colorful storage in place of a feature wall

Painted bookshelves, alcoves, and joinery can provide a focal point while making color part of the room’s architecture. The forecast’s example pairs Farrow & Ball Charlotte’s Locks with a heritage shade. Its designer notes that objects on open shelves break up and diffuse a vivid color.

Think about what will sit on the shelves before choosing a strong paint color. Books, ceramics, and framed pieces contribute their own colors and shapes, so the finished effect depends on both the painted surface and what it holds.

7. Mix patterns with a deliberate anchor

Pattern-clashing works best when the prints have a point of connection. Designer Molly Torres Portnof’s process begins with an anchor pattern, then varies texture and scale while keeping enough solid areas to give the eye a rest.

When comparing prints, look for:

  • A shared palette or motif: a color or recurring shape can link patterns from different periods.
  • Different scales: vary the size of the motifs so the prints do not compete on identical terms.
  • Texture: material differences can help a combination feel layered rather than flat.
  • Solid space: plain surfaces or upholstery provide visual pauses between patterns.

Use the anchor pattern to guide the other choices; the aim is a coordinated mix, not the maximum number of prints.

8. Seek “found luxury” in meaningful objects

Found luxury describes a room built gradually with inherited, vintage, or carefully sourced pieces chosen for craftsmanship, history, character, or personal meaning. Rather than buying a matching set all at once, let objects accumulate because they belong in the home and matter to the people living there.

This is an approach to value and character, not a guarantee that vintage items cost less or are always more sustainable. Inspect condition and suitability, and choose a piece for reasons beyond the assumption that age alone makes it worthwhile.

9. Bring back skirts, tassels, fringe, and pleats

Details sometimes described as old-fashioned can add movement and texture: think skirts, tassels, fringe, and pleats. In a Sarah Vaile example, a lacquered nook is balanced with warmer touches, including natural hemp fringe.

These details can soften a crisp or highly polished surface without requiring a room-wide change. Consider where a small amount of gathered fabric or fringe would add contrast, then balance it against the finishes already in the space.

10. Choose casual silhouettes for comfort

Relaxed forms in the forecast include low-slung sofas, chaise lounges, daybeds, curved-back armchairs, and low platform beds. Their common thread is informality and ease, rather than a single required style.

Match the silhouette to its use: a chaise can support lounging, a daybed can serve more than one purpose, and a curved-back armchair can create a comfortable seat in a smaller corner. There is no need to replace furniture that already works; the idea is to prioritize comfort when a change is due.

How to use the trends without turning your home into a checklist

Emily Kantz, interior designer and lead color strategist for Sherwin-Williams Colormix, captures the value of choice: “Color is deeply personal. Everyone has an opinion, and many people want to know what is trending. However, they don’t want to be told what to do with that information.” Use these directions as prompts, then filter them through your own routines, existing furnishings, and appetite for change.

  • Choose a practical need first, such as a quiet place to read or better pantry storage.
  • Try a small color or pattern move before extending it across a room.
  • Use materials and personal objects to add character, rather than pursuing a perfect match to a named aesthetic.
  • Keep the distinction clear between a designer-led forecast and evidence of how widely people are adopting a trend.
