In his first monthly edition of The Eye for Homes & Gardens Anthology, published October 1, 2026, Benjamin Reynaert looks back at a September in New York through rooms, objects, makers and places that stayed with him. His edit returns to a simple idea: interiors become memorable when they hold personal traces and reward a closer look.

Why a room can feel collected rather than decorated
At the Kips Bay Decorator Show House, Dallas designer Chad Dorsey’s “Editor’s Office” imagined a room shaped by its occupant’s interests. Fabric-lined walls and wood panels turned the walls into a broad pinboard for postcards and inspirational images; books, mementos and other ephemera added the impression of a life beyond the room.
Reynaert’s point is not that every surface needs filling. It is that personal objects can give a space its own story. As he puts it, “The best rooms are layered, personal and tell a unique story, and oftentimes the little things, objects and ephemera styled to a T bring those ideas forward most clearly.”

What a pottery workshop can reveal about a finished piece
During a visit to East Fork in Asheville, North Carolina, Reynaert saw the pottery and tableware business through its retail shop, workshop concept, creative studio and production buildings. His column describes a chain of craft processes that can sit behind a finished pot: glazing, mold-making, slip-casting, hand-building and making the clay used in the pieces.
He also visited potter Matt Jones in the Sandy Mush area. The column says Jones gathers clay from his backyard and built a wood-firing kiln. These details offer a glimpse of the work and material behind pottery, rather than a complete account of East Fork’s manufacturing methods. The article identifies co-founder Alex Matisse as Henri Matisse’s great-grandson and describes his interest in supporting and promoting American pottery traditions.

How bold furniture can depend on precise making
In Manhattan’s Chinatown, Love House founders Jared Heinrich and Aric Yeakey collaborated with textile designer Spencer Malinski on the business’s first original furniture collection: five ottomans. Reynaert describes four exclusive fabrics, including jacquards and printed velvets, with patterns inspired by 1970s “maxi-maxi” prints.
Samuel & Sons fringe, along with careful draping and cutting, gave the pieces their exuberant look. The collection shows how assertive pattern and ornament can rely on considered construction rather than visual excess alone.

Why an antiques shop rewards wandering
France Ici Antiques, an unmarked Chinatown shop owned by dealer Ian Rosoff, brought together objects from different places, periods and price points. Among the pieces Reynaert noticed were art, a small French landscape, a verdure tapestry and a marble bust set on an antique wooden column.
The appeal, as presented in the column, is the unprecious mix: one object can lead the eye to another, and the visit may turn up something unexpected. Reynaert also notes that Rosoff participates in The Ticking Tent this fall, but gives no dates or access details.

When a showhouse becomes an imagined world
The Brooklyn Heights Designer Showhouse occupies a landmarked corner-lot mansion dating to 1852, transformed room by room. Reynaert singles out Brooklyn-based designer Rachael Rosenblum’s garden-level room, which combines a hidden sidewalk entrance, emerald snakes, plaid wood, distinctive upholstery and a Tarot-inspired elevator.
That kind of setting gives designers room to take an idea further than they might in an ordinary commission. Here, the pleasure is partly in discovering how far the room’s strange, theatrical world extends.
A September edit about looking closely
Across the office, the pottery workshop, the ottomans, the antiques shop and the showhouse, Reynaert’s selections favor evidence of a person’s hand or imagination: an object with a story, a process behind a surface, or a detail that changes how a room reads. The column is a subjective monthly edit, not a product comparison or a guide to visiting these places.
Reynaert’s first month at Anthology also included an editorial pop-up, a talk at Designing Greenwich, product scouting and a New York Design Center celebration.
