New Atlas’s July 27, 2024 gallery presents 16 selected finalist images from the Urban Photo Awards, showing city life through scenes of work, celebration, sport, faith and everyday movement. It is a preview, not a list of winners: the article said judging for the main prize was still due in October.
What the 2024 gallery shows
Bronwyn Thompson’s New Atlas feature frames the competition as a way to look anew at “the built environment and its inhabitants.” The 16 selected photographs make that idea tangible: people occupy streets, work against industrial landscapes and gather for festivals, while buildings and public spaces shape each scene. The gallery is a selection, not a complete account of every finalist or award category.
The captions identify photographers from multiple countries. Some provide a title and location; others, in the available caption text, identify the photographer without naming the image. The descriptions below keep to what the feature states rather than inferring photographic technique or unseen context.

Selected finalist images
Movement, festivals and gathering
- “Sunset Flight” — Dmytro Geshengorin (Germany).
- Xin Permhansa (Thailand). The gallery caption text does not provide an image title.
- “Fire Festival” — Emiko Monobe (Japan).
- “Where the Wind Blows” — Vitaly Medvedev (Russia). Thompson describes women about to perform at a festival, caught by a sudden gust; their movement is set against a solid, bare building.
- Sonia Granata (Italy). The article describes this untitled-in-caption image as a joyful finalist in the “streets” category.
Work, streets and the built environment
- “Working at Night” — Shamal Shakibayi (Iran).
- “Minya Quarries” — Yousef Naser (Egypt). Identified as a “streets” finalist, it shows a lone miner extracting white limestone.
- “Venice of Africa” — Mauro de Bettio (Italy).
- Oliver Kolding Palm (Sweden). No image title is given in the gallery caption text.
- Max Cavallari (Italy). No image title is visible in the caption text.
Other titled photographs
- “Prayer” — Sanchayan Chowdhury.
- “Blue” — Adrienne Hutchings (US).
- “Sky is the Limit” — Happy Mukherjee (India).
- “Feria De La Linea” — Giedo van der Zwan (The Netherlands).
- “Baseball In Bhutan” — Matthew Desantis (US).
- “Timeless Expectations” — Stefano Martinelli (Italy).
Finalists, not final results
New Atlas published the gallery on July 27, 2024, describing that year as the competition’s fifteenth and saying the main prize would be judged in October. That is a preview-era statement, not confirmation of who ultimately won. The feature does not establish the final results, the competition’s full rules or judging criteria, or the complete set of categories.

What the feature does not establish
The gallery credits the photographers, but does not state what cameras or lenses they used. It also does not provide an authorized way to buy prints or confirm that the pictured work is available for sale. The captions are a guide to the selected scenes, not evidence of equipment, licensing or production details.
