Yes—cattle appear in Saharan rock art from a period when parts of the region supported pastoral life. At Tassili n’Ajjer in Algeria, cattle-period images depict daily and social life, while the broader rock-art record documents changing environments and wildlife. The paintings support the picture of a much wetter Sahara, but they are not a precise calendar: archaeologists have few direct dates for the images.
What the Saharan cattle art depicts
Tassili n’Ajjer is a vast plateau in southeastern Algeria, known for its sandstone formations and rock art. UNESCO describes more than 15,000 drawings and engravings there, spanning broadly from 6000 BC to the first centuries of the present era. That range applies to the full corpus, not specifically to cattle paintings. UNESCO characterizes the cattle-period scenes as depictions of daily and social life, and says the art as a whole bears witness to climate change, wildlife migrations, and human life on the Sahara’s edge. Cattle are part of a wider pastoral picture that includes other livestock and human activities. The images show that cattle mattered to the people who made or used this visual tradition; they do not, by themselves, establish exactly when each scene was painted or prove every detail of the climate at the time.
How the art relates to the Green Sahara
During the African Humid Period, much of the Sahara was wetter than it is today, with conditions that could support lakes, vegetation, wildlife, and human settlement in places now arid. Macquarie University describes the period as lasting roughly from 15,000 to 5,000 years ago. These are broad regional boundaries, not a single end date applicable to every Saharan locality. UNESCO interprets Tassili n’Ajjer’s images alongside archaeological remains as evidence of environmental and human change. Cattle scenes fit that larger picture of pastoral communities living in landscapes that were more hospitable than the modern desert. They are evidence to be read with climate and archaeological records, not a standalone climate measurement.
How old are the cattle images?
There is no reliable single date for all Saharan cattle paintings. Rock art is notoriously difficult to date, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art notes that the Sahara remains inadequately researched, with few dates for its rock art. The Met associates a bovidian artistic tradition with cattle’s arrival in North Africa around 4500–4000 BC; that range provides context for a tradition, not a secure date for every image. This distinction matters: an art-style chronology is not the same as a direct date obtained from a painting. Researchers therefore avoid treating the entire cattle-art record as if it came from one moment.
What pottery residues add to the evidence
At Takarkori, an archaeological site in the Libyan Sahara, researchers identified chemical evidence of dairying in absorbed food residues from pottery. The study places this practice in the fifth millennium BC. It independently supports the role of milk processing in Saharan pastoral life, but it dates evidence from that site—not the cattle paintings across the region. Dunne and colleagues, Nature (2012)

In other words, the evidence types answer different questions: images show what people chose to represent; pottery residues provide evidence of what vessels held or processed; climate reconstructions describe changing environmental conditions across regions. Together they strengthen the historical picture without making any one source prove more than it can.

A 2018 study in Nature Communications concluded that population growth and intensified pastoralism did not accelerate aridification and may instead have delayed the collapse of the Green Sahara. That is the study’s conclusion, not proof that herding caused the wetter conditions or a settled universal account of how the transition unfolded. Nature Communications (2018)
