Choose painting when your cabinet boxes and existing doors are sound and you want a new color or finish. Choose refacing when you want different door and drawer-front styles but the boxes and layout still work. If the boxes are damaged or the layout needs to change, get a repair or replacement assessment too: neither painting nor refacing fixes those issues by itself.

Painting keeps your existing cabinet fronts
Painting changes the color or finish of the doors, drawer fronts, and cabinet boxes while keeping those parts in place. It does not change the doors’ profile or solve structural problems. The result depends on preparation and on using products compatible with the cabinet material.

Refacing updates the visible exterior
Refacing typically replaces cabinet doors and drawer fronts and updates visible cabinet exteriors with a coordinated finish or covering, while retaining the cabinet boxes. HUD’s homeowner guide to remodeling and repairing a home describes cabinet refurbishment that replaces doors and drawer fronts. Providers may define the rest of the scope differently, so check exactly which surfaces and components are included.
Start with the cabinet boxes and kitchen layout
Inspect the cabinet boxes and ask whether the current layout works for your household. If the boxes are sturdy and the arrangement suits the kitchen, either painting or refacing may be an option. If there is damage or a functional problem, ask a contractor to assess repairs or replacement rather than assuming a surface update will address it. A layout change may also require more than a finish project.

Choose based on the change you want
- Choose painting if you like the existing door design and mainly want another color or finish.
- Consider refacing if you want a different door or drawer-front style, or the current fronts are too worn to keep, but the cabinet boxes are still suitable.
- Get another assessment if the boxes are damaged or the layout does not work; painting and refacing retain the existing boxes.
For painting, the existing fronts’ material and condition matter. Sherwin-Williams’ cabinet refinishing guide recommends choosing primer for the surface, including an adhesion-promoting primer for laminate or previously painted wood. Confirm that any primer and coating you choose are suitable for your specific substrate, and follow the product instructions.
Compare written scopes, not just project names
“Painting” and “refacing” do not guarantee identical scopes from one provider to another. Ask each contractor to itemize the work so you can compare like with like:

- Doors and drawer fronts: retained, painted, or replaced?
- Which exposed cabinet-box surfaces will be painted, covered, or left as they are?
- Are hardware removal, replacement, or reinstallation included?
- Are repairs, cleaning, sanding, priming, masking, and other preparation included?
- What cleanup is included, and what finish warranty is offered?
Get the preparation and materials in writing as well as the visible finish. The project label alone does not establish what a quote covers.
Use local estimates; don’t assume one option always costs less
Costs depend on location, kitchen size, materials, preparation, and the work included. A 2026 comparison from CabinetRefacing.nyc lists cabinet painting at $2,000–$5,000 and refacing at $4,000–$9,000 for its New York City market. Those are one provider’s local figures, not national estimates; request itemized quotes for your own kitchen.

No national statistic directly comparing painting and refacing costs, lifespan, or return on investment is established by the cited sources. Don’t treat a broad claim that one option is always cheaper or more durable as a substitute for a defined scope and local quote.

A DIY painting setup may include cleaner or degreaser, sanding sheets, a suitable adhesion-promoting primer where needed, cabinet coating, masking supplies, and application tools. Those are components of a project, not a universal kit: the right products depend on the cabinet material and its existing finish.
Check lead-safety requirements before disturbing old paint
Sanding or scraping painted surfaces can create dust. The EPA’s Renovation, Repair and Painting (RRP) guidance for consumers covers renovation work that disturbs painted surfaces in pre-1978 housing and child-occupied facilities. Requirements apply to covered firms and certified renovators, with stated exceptions. The EPA advises people planning work in pre-1978 homes to use a lead-safe certified contractor or follow lead-safe practices for DIY renovation. Check current federal and state requirements before disturbing old coatings.
