If your cabinet boxes are sound and the kitchen layout works, painting or refinishing is usually the more practical way to change the look. Replacement is worth investigating when the boxes are damaged, the dimensions or layout need to change, or new doors and cabinet styles are essential. The right comparison is about condition, desired result, and the full project scope—not a blanket claim that one option always costs less.
Should you paint or replace your cabinets?
Start by checking the cabinet boxes—the fixed structures attached to the walls—and deciding whether you want a new surface or a different kitchen. Paint changes color and finish; it does not change cabinet size, storage arrangement, or door shape. Replacement can change those things, but may also disturb countertops, backsplash, or flooring.

How much does cabinet painting cost compared with replacement?
HomeAdvisor’s guide, updated June 17, 2026, gives a normal cabinet-refinishing project range of $1,992–$4,494 and a wider range of $700–$7,000. It separately estimates kitchen refinishing at about $1,500–$5,000 per project. These are HomeAdvisor estimates, not a local quote; the guide says costs vary with location, cabinet size and quality, finishing method, labor, preparation, and repair needs. That guide also estimates refacing at $4,300–$10,000. Refacing keeps the cabinet structure while changing visible components or surfaces, so it is a distinct scope from either painting or full replacement.
The available estimates do not establish a directly comparable U.S. full-replacement price range on the same scope basis. Avoid subtracting one online range from another: they may cover different numbers of cabinets, repairs, hardware, demolition, disposal, and adjacent work.

How to compare contractor estimates
Ask for written bids that cover the same work. Check whether each includes surface preparation, repairs, doors and drawer fronts, hardware, demolition, disposal, and work on countertops, backsplash, or flooring. A low figure may omit work another bid includes. Ask the contractor to identify any repair allowance separately.
How long does each option take, and how disruptive is it?
Painting or refinishing keeps the existing boxes and layout, so it is generally less construction-intensive than removing and installing cabinets. Replacement can involve demolition and additional work where countertops, flooring, or backsplash meet the cabinets. A comparison guide describes replacement as the slowest option and resurfacing as the fastest, but does not establish a universal project schedule in days or weeks. Get a schedule that distinguishes these different measures rather than relying on a single promised duration:
- Crew workdays on site
- Calendar time, including gaps between work stages
- Door or material delivery lead time
- Drying or curing time before surfaces can be used normally
- How long the kitchen will be difficult or impossible to use

Painting is suited to a color or finish change when the existing boxes and layout meet your needs. A professionally described process includes removing doors and hardware, cleaning, sanding, priming, and applying paint with a fine spray. Refacing
Refacing retains usable cabinet boxes but replaces visible elements such as doors, drawer fronts, knobs, or surface veneers. It can make a larger appearance change than painting alone without replacing the cabinet structure. The cabinet interiors remain unchanged unless they are also treated.
Replacement
Replacement is the option to assess when you need different cabinet dimensions, a new layout, or a door style that cannot be achieved by painting or refacing. It offers the broadest scope for changing the kitchen, with the trade-off that removal and adjoining-finish work may add disruption.
What do homeowners choose?
The 2025 Houzz U.S. Kitchen Trends Study reports that among homeowners with completed, current, or planned kitchen renovations during 2024–25, 69% replaced all cabinets and 27% undertook a partial cabinet project. Among partial-upgrade projects, 55% included exterior refinishing and 17% included refinishing cabinet interiors; the reported share for interior refinishing rose by 4 percentage points. These survey figures describe what respondents reported doing, not which option is more durable or cost-effective for a particular kitchen.
