Try sublimation on a blank made specifically for the process: the ink bonds with polyester fabric or a polyester-coated surface, not with an ordinary mug, coaster, or planter. These ten project ideas range from small personalized gifts to wearable and home-decor items; the right choice depends on the blank’s material, color, and intended use.
What you need to know before choosing a project
Sublimation transfers dye onto polyester or a surface coated to accept it. Epson’s Sublimation Printers for Beginners & Small Business describes the basic process: make artwork, print it onto dye-sublimation transfer paper, then use a heat press to apply it to a compatible blank. The transfer may look muted before pressing; the ink becomes part of the suitable material during the process.
For fabric, Epson recommends white or light-colored polyester. Its guide cautions that the process described there does not work on cotton or dark fabric, and warns against long-term outdoor applications. For hard goods and drinkware, check that the surface has a sublimation-ready polyester coating; an ordinary item made from a similar-looking material is not necessarily compatible.

The basic supplies are design software, dye-sublimation transfer paper, a heat press, and compatible blanks. Follow the blank maker’s instructions for temperature, time, and pressure; those settings are not universal.

10 sublimation project ideas
1. Magnets
Make small pieces of personalized fridge decor, keepsakes, or themed designs for another magnetic surface. Choose a magnet blank with a surface explicitly made for sublimation rather than assuming any magnet can take the transfer.
2. Keychains
A sublimation-ready keychain is a compact canvas for a name, illustration, or small gift design. It can also work as a branded giveaway, provided the blank’s printable face is designed for sublimation.
3. Photo mugs
Turn a photo or illustration into personalized drinkware. The mug must be sold as sublimation-ready or otherwise specified as having a compatible polyester coating; an ordinary ceramic mug will not work simply because it has a smooth surface.

4. Apparel
Use compatible polyester clothing for colorful designs such as illustrations, patterns, or team graphics. White or light-colored polyester is Epson’s recommended fabric choice. Cotton garments and dark fabrics are not suitable for the process described in its guidance.
5. Coasters
Coasters can carry a coordinated pattern, a small illustration, or a personalized motif while serving as functional decor. Pick a coaster blank manufactured for sublimation instead of relying on its material or finish by appearance alone.
6. Pillows
A pillow cover can bring a custom pattern or artwork into a room. Check the fabric content and the blank’s instructions: the textile must be compatible with sublimation, and light-colored polyester is the safer choice under Epson’s guidance.

Personalized tags can combine a pet’s name with a simple graphic or contact details. Epson includes pet tags among possible polyester-coated goods. Select a tag blank specifically intended for sublimation and follow its instructions.

A decorated planter can make a distinctive gift or windowsill accent, but this idea depends on the surface. Use only a planter blank specifically coated for sublimation; ordinary ceramic, plastic, or terracotta planters are not established as compatible by the cited guidance.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to choose the right idea
Start with the blank, not the artwork. The material and coating determine whether sublimation can work; then consider the item’s purpose and the equipment or handling it needs.
- Check the material and color: For fabric, look for compatible polyester and favor white or light colors. For hard goods, confirm the surface is sublimation-coated.
- Match the item to its use: Apparel and bags are wearable or carryable projects; mugs and coasters are drinkware or tabletop items; magnets, pillows, mousepads, tags, and planters serve as accessories or decor.
- Read the blank maker’s instructions: Use its specified press settings and handling directions. Do not assume one project’s settings apply to another.
- Plan for care: For textiles, follow the blank’s washing instructions. The 2024 idea roundup also recommends avoiding harsh detergents or bleach and limiting direct sun, but the available sources do not establish a universal durability guarantee.
Epson’s Unlock New Creative Potential with Dye-Sublimation Printing, dated May 2, 2025, also discusses dye-sublimation applications. Its examples and material guidance support treating compatibility as a property of the specific blank, not of a broad product category.
