Start with an opened Hot Wheels die-cast car you are willing to change. For a first custom, keep the work to decoration—paint, graphics or decals—before attempting body or suspension changes. Those deeper modifications are a different skill tier and can permanently alter the original car.
What “customizing” a Hot Wheels car can mean
Customs range from adding paint or graphics to reshaping the casting and changing its components. The 39th Annual Hot Wheels Collectors Convention packet uses “mild” for repainting or adding airbrushed graphics and decals; its advanced category includes work such as grafting, filling, chopping, changing body parts or suspension, and using styrene. That is a contest’s way of grouping entries, not a universal technical standard.
| Approach | Level of alteration | Reversibility | Skills and tools | Effect on the original |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Paint, graphics or decals | Primarily decorative | Usually difficult to reverse once applied; removable decoration depends on the material | Mattel’s historical examples use markers or pens, stencils, masks and decals | Changes the car’s finish |
| Body or suspension work | Structural or component changes | Generally permanent once the casting or parts are altered | May involve grafting, filling, chopping, body-part or suspension changes, and styrene, as described in the convention packet | Can substantially change the original casting or its components |
The sources do not establish standardized time, cost or difficulty ratings for either approach. Nor are all castings shown to be equally easy to modify.

Choose a donor car before choosing a technique
A Hot Wheels die-cast car can be the physical canvas for a custom. For practice, choose a modestly priced opened donor car that suits the design you have in mind. This is a practical recommendation, not a Mattel endorsement of modifying its products. Set aside collectible examples you do not want to alter.
- For a first project, pick a car whose existing finish you are comfortable changing.
- Choose based on the intended design rather than assuming every model will accept the same modifications.
- If you want to keep the option of returning to the original appearance, avoid permanent changes and check whether your chosen decoration can be removed.
What do I need to customize Hot Wheels?
For a decoration-focused project, the basic categories are a donor car and materials for adding color or graphics. Mattel’s product listings offer examples of beginner-friendly design activities, but they are historical listings rather than confirmation of what is currently for sale.

Markers, stencils and decals
Mattel’s Hot Wheels Car Design Custom Kit 2 listing describes cars, markers, a stencil and graphic-fusion decal sheets. The product record identifies it as BGJ87 and gives a 2014 release date. Treat it as an example of an official kit Mattel offered, not a guaranteed-current purchase.
Airbrush-style decoration
Mattel’s Airbrush Auto Designer listings describe customizable cars, pens or markers, stencils, spray masks and decals. These listings show the kinds of materials Mattel has marketed for decorating cars; they do not establish present availability.

Build-focused play set
Mattel’s Mega Construx Hot Wheels Car Customizer (GVM13) product page reports a 2021 release and describes four vehicles and specialized pieces for creating hot rods. It is another example of a design activity, rather than a recommendation that the set is currently in stock.
Move to advanced modifications only when the project calls for them
Body and suspension changes go beyond a finish refresh. The convention packet’s advanced examples—grafting, filling, chopping, changing body parts or suspension, and working with styrene—signal that this tier involves altering the car itself, not simply decorating it. Decide whether the intended result justifies changing the donor permanently before taking that route.

Aftermarket 1:64 wheels, axles, decals and small tools are categories hobbyists may consider for more ambitious builds. Available evidence does not establish a preferred supplier, a compatibility chart or reliable fit across models, so verify fit for the specific casting and parts rather than assuming components are universal.

Customization changes the object being customized: a repaint changes the finish, while body or suspension work can change the casting or components. If preserving a particular collectible matters, use a different donor. Community discussions mention paint, decals, wheel swaps and tools, but anecdotes do not establish safe procedures or universal parts compatibility.
