You can capture fresh flowers’ fragrance at home by repeatedly placing petals against odorless fat in a process called enfleurage. The result is a scented fat, or pomade—not essential oil and not automatically a safe, shelf-stable spray perfume. For delicate blooms, cold enfleurage is the low-equipment method described in the sources below.
What you can make at home
Enfleurage transfers volatile aromatic compounds from fresh flowers into odorless fat. Spread the fat in a shallow layer, lay petals against it, and replace spent petals with fresh ones over repeated rounds. As the fat takes on more aroma, it becomes flower-scented pomade. Health Canada describes this repeated replacement process as continuing until the fat is saturated with aroma chemicals: Health Canada’s enfleurage ingredient entry.
That is the direct result of enfleurage. It is not pure essential oil, and straining the fat does not turn it into a conventional spray perfume. Making a perfume blend is a separate task; Fragonard notes that essences are blended to create a fragrance.

Choose a method that matches the flower

Fragonard describes cold enfleurage as suited to fragile flowers whose scent may be altered by heat, including jasmine, tuberose, and daffodils. NAHA and the Missouri Botanical Garden glossary also name jasmine and tuberose as examples; these are classic candidates, not a guarantee that every garden flower will work. Try a simple enfleurage project
Science Buddies describes an educational project using rose or lavender petals, vegetable shortening, plates, scissors, and a later alcohol-extraction step. Its page estimates the project as “Very Long (1+ months),” an estimate for that project rather than a universal timetable. Frequency and duration depend on the method and flower; Fragonard describes daily flower replacement for cold enfleurage. Read the Science Buddies flower-perfume project as an educational example, not a validated cosmetic recipe.
- Identify the flower. Use only flowers you can identify correctly and that have a noticeable fragrance. Use petals rather than other flower parts. Ask permission before picking flowers from someone else’s yard.
- Prepare the fat. Spread a shallow layer of odorless fat in a clean, shallow dish. The educational example uses vegetable shortening; it does not establish that shortening is suitable as a finished skin-care product.
- Lay on fresh petals. Place clean petals against the fat. Keep the process focused on the petals and avoid adding unidentified plant material.
- Replace spent flowers. Remove the old petals and add fresh ones repeatedly so the fat can take up more aroma. There is no source-backed universal schedule or saturation point for every flower.
- Stop at pomade unless you have a suitable, safe next step. The scented fat is the immediate product. The Science Buddies project demonstrates using alcohol afterward to extract fragrance from shortening, but that educational example is not a validated formula for a wearable perfume.
Know what the perfumery terms mean
- Pomade: scented fat produced by enfleurage.
- Concrete: a waxy aromatic material produced by volatile-solvent extraction of plant material.
- Absolute: a concentrated perfumery extract made by further alcohol extraction; it is not another name for essential oil.
- Essential oil and hydrosol: products separated through steam distillation.

Safety and limits of a homemade result
- Do not consume the extract or put unidentified flowers on your skin.
- The sources reviewed do not provide a validated skin-safe, preserved, shelf-stable perfume recipe for arbitrary flowers, nor a dependable flower-to-perfume yield.
- Keep alcohol away from heat and flames. The Science Buddies project mentions stovetop use as well as alcohol; do not evaporate flammable alcohol near heat.
- Do not assume a scented fat is safe to wear or will remain stable simply because it smells pleasant.
