The Mini Sawtooth Stars pattern from AllPeopleQuilt makes a 28-inch-square quilt from sixteen Sawtooth Star blocks. Each block finishes at 3 inches. The pattern offers traditional piecing or a foundation-piecing template for its small Flying Geese units.
What the Mini Sawtooth Stars pattern makes
AllPeopleQuilt, in a pattern published June 14, 2013, specifies a finished quilt measuring 28 inches square. It uses sixteen Sawtooth Star blocks, each 3 inches square when finished. The blocks are built around a pink center square, with four Flying Geese units and four cream background squares arranged around it.
Each block measures 3 1/2 inches square before it is sewn into the quilt. That unfinished measurement includes the seam allowances needed to join the blocks.
Fabric and batting requirements
The pattern’s yardages assume 44/45-inch-wide, 100% cotton fabric. Its sample uses the Fairy Story fabric line; these are project specifications, not confirmation that the line is currently available.

Choose quilting cotton fabric of the stated width if you want to follow the listed yardages. The pattern does not require a particular brand of fabric or a specific machine.
How the blocks are assembled
- For the traditional method, mark diagonal lines on the blue-check squares and use them with cream squares to make triangle units.
- Combine the triangle units into Flying Geese. Each unit should measure 2 by 1 1/4 inches, including seam allowances.
- Arrange four Flying Geese around a pink center square, with four cream squares completing the block’s corners.
- Make sixteen blocks. Each should measure 3 1/2 inches unfinished and finish at 3 inches after joining.
Small units leave little room to absorb inaccurate seams, so measure the Flying Geese before assembling the blocks. The pattern also supplies a foundation-piecing alternative for the Flying Geese; it does not include comparative test results showing that one construction method works better for everyone.

Traditional piecing or foundation piecing?
| Choose | It may suit you if… | What the pattern establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Traditional piecing | You are comfortable sewing small triangles and checking their measurements. | The instructions describe marking diagonal lines and assembling the triangle and Flying Geese units. |
| Foundation piecing | You prefer following a foundation template for small units. | The pattern offers a Flying Geese foundation template and notes that some quilters prefer paper piecing for precision at this scale. |
The choice is specific to the Flying Geese units; the pattern does not claim foundation piecing is universally easier, faster, or more accurate.
How the quilt center comes together
The pattern groups the stars with setting pieces into four units, each trimmed to 9 inches square. Join those units with the multicolor stripe sashing and blue-check sashing squares. The resulting quilt center is stated as 22 inches square including seam allowances. Borders bring the finished quilt to 28 inches square; follow the linked pattern for its border and finishing instructions.
