Yes. Google Gemini can make prompt-based edits to uploaded and generated images, including changing backgrounds, replacing objects and adding elements. Google has since introduced its Nano Banana image models, with announced features such as blending reference photos and directing local edits. That makes Gemini useful for certain quick, conversational changes—not a proven replacement for Photoshop’s broader professional workflows.
What can Gemini change in an image?
In an announcement dated April 30, 2025, Google said Gemini users could upload an image and request changes, or edit an image generated in Gemini. Its examples included changing a background, replacing objects and adding elements. The interaction is conversational: describe the desired result rather than manually adjusting every edit. Google said the feature would roll out gradually to most countries and in more than 45 languages over the following weeks; that announcement does not establish current availability in every country. For a painter or illustrator, that could mean exploring a different setting behind a subject, trying a changed object or adding a visual element to an image. These are examples of the kinds of changes Google described, not a guarantee that every edit will preserve all other details exactly as intended.

How Nano Banana changed the editing story
Nano Banana: references, likeness and iterative edits
On August 26, 2025, Google introduced Nano Banana as an updated image model in Gemini. Google highlighted maintaining a person’s or pet’s likeness across edits, blending multiple photos, making iterative changes to a scene, and applying the visual style of one image to an object in another. Google published further demonstrations on September 12, 2025, including turning a pet into a game character, styling a photo as a drawing, and changing clothing or a house’s appearance. Directing a specific region
On December 19, 2025, Google announced a way for Nano Banana users to circle, draw on or annotate an image to guide more precise changes. That announcement documents the feature direction at that time; it does not confirm that the current interface or controls are identical for every user. Google’s local-editing announcement
Nano Banana 2
On February 26, 2026, Google announced Nano Banana 2, identifying it as Gemini 3.1 Flash Image and describing faster, high-fidelity image generation and editing, along with improved instruction following. The announcement also lists developer-facing controls such as aspect ratios, resolutions and configurable thinking. The timeline matters: Gemini’s native image-editing announcement came in April 2025; Nano Banana was introduced later that year; Nano Banana 2 followed in February 2026. They are successive product developments, not one unchanged feature or model.
Gemini or Photoshop: which suits the task?
“Forget Photoshop” works as a provocative headline, but Google’s announcements do not show that Gemini replaces Photoshop across professional editing. The practical choice depends on how you want to work:

Watermarks and the status of edited images
In its August 26, 2025 Nano Banana announcement, Google said images created or edited in the Gemini app had a visible watermark and an invisible SynthID watermark. This is a dated description of that release. It should not be taken as confirmation that watermark presentation is unchanged across later models, products or current settings.
