A clamshell quilting design is a repeating line of curved arcs, often arranged like overlapping scallops. You can stitch it freehand by moving the quilt under the needle, or use a quilting ruler against a compatible ruler foot to guide each curve. A ruler is optional: the right choice depends on your machine setup, preferred arc size, and whether you want marked guides.

What a clamshell quilting design looks like

The motif is built from repeated curved arcs. Changing the arc size, spacing, or arrangement gives the pattern a different character. Angela Walters’s free-motion clamshell lesson presents it as a classic hand-quilting design with modern variations and examples on quilts.

Choose between freehand and ruler-guided stitching

Approach How it guides the curve What to check
Free-motion, freehand You move the quilt under the needle to draw the arcs. You can follow marked lines, but no clamshell template is required. Use a suitable free-motion foot and decide whether guide lines will help you keep the rows aligned.
Ruler-guided You guide a quilting ruler or template against a ruler foot as you move the quilt. Confirm that the foot and ruler suit your machine; a stand-up machine may also require a ruler base. Follow the machine and tool instructions.

There is no established best method or objectively best ruler in the available instructional and manufacturer materials. They do not provide controlled comparisons of accuracy or learning time, so choose based on your setup and preferences rather than a promise of more even stitching.

Stitch clamshells freehand

Freehand free-motion quilting lets you shape the arcs directly as you move the quilt. A Quilty Love clamshell tutorial recommends marking straight guide lines with a Hera marker. Its listed supplies include a free-motion foot, thread, a quilt ruler and the marker. Treat the lines as alignment aids, not as a requirement for every machine or every design.

  1. Set up your machine for free-motion quilting with an appropriate foot, following its manual.
  2. If you want help aligning the rows, mark straight guide lines on the quilt with a Hera marker or another suitable marking method.
  3. Move the quilt under the needle to form a sequence of arcs, using your guides if marked.
  4. Practise the scale and spacing on a sample before quilting the finished piece.

The tutorial demonstrates freehand stitching and variations, but it is not a standardized procedure for every machine. Use your machine’s instructions for its specific free-motion setup.

Use a clamshell ruler or template

A quilting ruler guides the ruler foot around a curve; it does not replace the need to move and control the quilt. Compatibility matters: the tool, foot and machine must be suitable for one another. BERNINA’s Curves and Clams Ruler Kit instructions say the clamshell tool makes arcs or an all-over clamshell pattern, and specify using a ruler foot. The 2021 manual also says a stand-up machine needs a ruler base and that drawn or chalked guides, or quilt seam lines, may be useful.

If you are looking for a clamshell quilting ruler, the Creative Grids Shelly Machine Quilting Tool is one product made for this kind of curved quilting. The manufacturer describes it as suitable for clamshells and other motifs, including orange peels, flowers, arcs and leaves. It measures 4.5 by 5.25 inches and is designed for a ruler foot. Grip features and guide markings are manufacturer-stated features, not independent performance findings.

Other tools have different sizes and kit designs. Janome’s Ruler Work Kit introduction lists an oval clamshell template measuring 3.25 by 4.25 inches. Its guide calls for a machine with a ruler foot and recommends checking compatibility. That Janome template is not the same tool as the BERNINA or Creative Grids options; do not assume their parts or feet are interchangeable.

Check setup and choose an arc size before stitching

  • Verify the machine: Check the manufacturer’s instructions for ruler-foot compatibility and any base requirements, especially on a stand-up machine.
  • Match the tool to the setup: Do not assume a ruler or foot designed for one machine or kit will fit another.
  • Pick the scale: Compare the template’s stated dimensions or arc options with the clamshell size you want. For example, BERNINA’s clamshell tool has 1-, 2-, 3- and 4-inch sides.
  • Decide about guides: Marked lines or existing seam lines can help align a repeat. Both free-motion and ruler-guided approaches may use them.
  • Practise safely: Follow the tool’s instructions for positioning and handling the ruler, and test your setup on a quilt sandwich before starting the project.

A template can guide the curve, but the sources do not establish that one approach guarantees more consistent results. The practical decision is whether you prefer freehand movement or ruler-guided control, and whether a specific tool is compatible with your machine.
