The AllPeopleQuilt “Simple Squares Baby Quilt” finishes at 54½ inches square. Its center is four 21-inch patchwork blocks made from 3½-inch squares, joined with pieced borders. The pattern calls for rotary cutting and sewing accurate ¼-inch seams; its fabric quantities assume 42 inches of usable fabric width. This guide follows that specific pattern, not other quilts with similar names.
Finished size and pattern overview
The finished quilt measures 54½ inches square, and each of its four blocks measures 21 inches square. The blocks are arranged in a two-by-two center, with pieced borders around the center. AllPeopleQuilt identifies the design as inspired by “Ocean Breeze,” designed by Stephanie Luiere; Diane Tomlinson is credited as quilt tester. The sample was machine-quilted by Kelly Ashton, though the instructions allow you to quilt it as you like. See the pattern and its diagrams.
Fabric, batting and other materials
The pattern specifies the following fabric amounts and materials. Its yardages and cutting plan assume 42 inches of usable fabric width.

- One 10-inch novelty-print square.
- Four 10-inch assorted red squares.
- Assorted 9-by-21-inch fat eighths in blue and yellow, green, light blue and gold prints.
- ½ yard solid white.
- ⅜ yard red paisley.
- Three 9-by-21-inch fat eighths: blue paisley, white print and blue denim print.
- 1½ yards solid gray for borders and binding.
- ¼ yard red chicken-wire print.
- One 63-inch-square piece of batting.
- 3½ yards backing fabric.
The listed prints and solids build the blocks and pieced borders; gray fabric is used for the borders and binding. The pattern does not require a particular fabric brand. Its example collection is Down on the Farm by Doodlebug Design Inc. for Riley Blake Designs, but availability can change.

Cutting and assembling the four blocks
Cut the specified fabrics into 3½-inch squares, border strips and rectangles according to the pattern. The block layout is built row by row, so keep the pattern diagram beside you as you sort and arrange the prints.
- Lay out the squares for one block in seven rows, following the pattern diagram for placement and orientation.
- Sew the squares in each row together, using ¼-inch seams. Join the completed rows to make a 21-inch finished block.
- Repeat the layout and sewing process until you have four blocks.
- Orient the blocks as shown in the diagram. Join two blocks to make each half of the quilt center, then sew the two halves together.
The pattern gives the assembled quilt center as 42½ inches, including seam allowances. Match seams and keep the blocks in the illustrated orientation before adding borders.

Adding borders, quilting and binding
Make the short and long pieced border strips from the gray strips and red chicken-wire rectangles. Attach the short strips to opposite sides of the center, then add the long strips to the remaining sides to complete the quilt top. Follow the pattern diagram for the strip arrangement.
- Layer the completed top with the 63-inch-square batting and backing.
- Baste the layers together, then quilt as desired.
- Use the gray strips to bind the quilt edges.
Is this quilt suitable for a beginner?
The pattern names rotary cutting and sewing a ¼-inch seam as its skills. Its repeated square blocks and row-by-row construction make the piecing straightforward to follow, but accuracy still matters: consistent seams help the rows and blocks fit together. A beginner comfortable with those skills can work through the pattern using its layout diagram; a quilter new to either skill may want to practice on scraps first.

Make sure you have the right “Simple Squares” pattern
Several baby-quilt projects have similar names but different sizes and construction. The exact-title AllPeopleQuilt project described here has four blocks, 3½-inch squares and a finished size of 54½ inches square. Bonjour Quilts’ “Sweet and Simple Squares” is a different quilt: it finishes at about 36½ by 50 inches and uses 5-inch squares in a color-wash layout. A separate personal adaptation at What’s Nana Making describes a double-gauze backing without batting; that is the maker’s adaptation, not the materials plan for this pattern. Another listing describes a 40-by-56-inch version; it is also not the exact-title project. All About Quilts’ listing identifies that separate project.
