The most beautiful embroidery stitch is the one that makes the mark your design needs: a clean outline, a smooth fill, a looping border, a simple flower petal, or a raised dot. Start with a few versatile stitches, then adjust their length, spacing, thread, and tension to suit the pattern.

Choose stitches by the effect you want

Stitch Best for Surface effect Coverage
Back stitch Outlines and continuous lines Flat, solid line Connected stitches
Stem stitch Lettering and outlines Slightly twisted line Connected, staggered stitches
Running stitch Simple lines and decorative marks Light, dashed line Separate stitches
Chain stitch Outlines, borders, and fills Linked loops Looped line or packed fill
Satin stitch Monograms, petals, and leaves Smooth, flat fill Closely packed parallel stitches
Long-and-short filling stitch Shading and filled shapes Blended or directional fill Closely packed stitches of varied lengths
Lazy daisy (detached chain) Petals and small motifs Single loop secured at its tip One motif or a grouped flower
French knot Flower centers and small details Raised dot Scattered or clustered knots
Seed stitch Scattered texture and light shading Small marks in varied directions Density changes with spacing

These uses and techniques follow DMC’s stitch guide, which includes diagrams and videos. No stitch is inherently best for every design: choose according to the shape, desired surface, and amount of coverage.

Stitches for lines and outlines

Back stitch

Use back stitch when an outline needs to read as one steady line. Set a consistent stitch length: bring the needle up, take it down to make the first stitch, then bring it up again a stitch-length ahead. Work backward to meet the end of the previous stitch. Keeping the stitches similar in length helps the line look even.

Stem stitch

Stem stitch suits lettering and curved outlines. Make a series of staggered straight stitches, bringing the needle up near the end of the previous stitch. Keep the working thread consistently to one side as you form each stitch; changing sides can alter the line’s appearance.

Running stitch

Running stitch creates a simpler, lightly dashed line. Make a sequence of stitches—often similar in length—with spaces between them. Vary the spacing or length to change the rhythm. DMC also describes it as useful for gathering, quilting, and techniques including sashiko, cross stitch, and kantha.

Stitches for fills and borders

Satin stitch

Satin stitch covers a small shape with close, parallel straight stitches. For a crisp edge, DMC suggests outlining the shape with split stitch. Work from the middle toward one edge, then from the middle toward the other, placing adjacent stitches close enough to cover the fabric without overlapping into a bulky ridge.

  1. Transfer or draw a simple shape, such as a leaf, onto the fabric.
  2. Outline its edge with split stitch if you want a defined boundary.
  3. Bring the needle up on one side of the shape and take it down on the opposite side.
  4. Place the next stitch beside the first, matching its direction and keeping the stitches close together.
  5. Continue from the center toward one edge, then fill the other half from the center.

For larger areas or gradual shading, try long-and-short filling stitch, also called long-and-short satin stitch or silk shading. Its straight stitches vary in length while staying closely packed. Split stitch can also provide padding under satin or long-and-short stitches.

Chain stitch

Chain stitch makes a linked-loop line. Bring the needle up, then take it down close to the same point while leaving a loop on the surface. Bring it back up at the desired stitch length inside that loop, and make a small stitch to secure the loop. Repeat to extend the chain. A row can work as an outline or border; closely arranged rows can fill a shape.

Stitches for petals and texture

Lazy daisy (detached chain)

A lazy daisy is one chain loop secured at its tip. Bring the needle up, form a loop, then take the needle down at the loop’s end and secure it with a tiny stitch. Arrange several loops around a center to make a simple flower.

French knot

French knots add raised dots for details such as flower centers. Their size depends partly on how many times the thread is wrapped: one or two wraps make a small knot, with two generally producing a larger one.

  1. Bring the needle up where you want the knot.
  2. Wrap the working thread around the needle once or twice near the fabric.
  3. Keep the thread taut, then take the needle down very close to—but not through—the original hole.
  4. Draw the thread through while maintaining tension so the wrap settles into a knot.

Space knots apart for scattered texture or place them close together for a denser surface. DMC’s stitch guide shows the needle movement for this and other techniques.

Seed stitch

Seed stitch is made from short, separate straight stitches placed in varied directions. Spread them out for a light, scattered effect; move them closer together for denser coverage or shading.

Gather a simple beginner toolkit

DMC’s embroidery guide identifies these basics: six-strand embroidery floss, fabric or another stitchable item, an embroidery or chenille needle, a hoop to hold the fabric taut, sharp pointed scissors, and a pattern with a soluble marker or transfer paper. A particular brand or kit is not required.

  • Floss: Six-strand embroidery floss lets you work with the thread as supplied or separate strands for a finer line.
  • Fabric: Choose a surface that can be stitched and held securely in the hoop.
  • Needle: Use an embroidery or chenille needle suitable for the fabric and thread.
  • Hoop: Taut fabric is easier to stitch consistently.
  • Scissors: Sharp pointed scissors help trim thread near the work.
  • Pattern transfer: A soluble marker or transfer paper can guide your stitches.

The DMC page also links tutorials for back stitch, satin stitch, and French knot.

Practice before stitching the finished design

Try each chosen stitch on a fabric scrap first. Change one variable at a time—stitch length, thread amount, spacing, or tension—and compare the result. This is especially useful for satin stitch, where gaps can show fabric, and French knots, where thread tension affects how the wrap settles.
