10 Tips for Choosing Fabric for Your Project

Start with the finished item’s use and setting, then compare fiber, construction, weight, feel, care, and application-specific performance before choosing fabric.

Choose fabric by matching it to the job: how the finished item will be used, what it will be exposed to, and how it can be cared for. Then compare fiber content, construction, weight, feel, and relevant performance information. The right choice for a garment may be a poor fit for upholstery or drapery, so start with the application—not a claim that one fiber is universally best.

1. Define the fabric’s job and setting

Write down what the finished item must handle before comparing fabrics. Clothing may need to move comfortably and survive regular washing; upholstery may face repeated sitting and friction; drapery may receive prolonged sunlight. Moisture, indoor or outdoor placement, and cleaning routines can also change what matters.

For contract textiles, the Association for Contract Textiles (ACT) says its voluntary performance guidance depends on construction, intended application, and whether the fabric is for indoor or outdoor use. Those criteria are not universal minimums for every household or apparel project. See ACT’s performance guidelines.

2. Read the fiber content, not just the product name

Look for generic fiber names and percentages on the label. In the United States, covered textile products generally disclose fibers by weight in descending order. Under the Federal Trade Commission’s labeling guidance, constituents below 5% by weight are generally grouped as “other fiber(s),” with exceptions, including wool and fibers that have a functional significance. Requirements can vary by product and claim; consult the FTC textile and wool labeling overview for scope and details.

100% Cotton Muslin Fabric, 63 Inch X 2 Yards Unbleached Fabric by The Yard
  • Package Includes: You will receive a 63-inch wide and 2-yard (1.8m) long muslin fabric; the suitable size design provides plenty of material for your sewing and creative projects; Note: order QTY more than 1, receive several separate packs

  • Natural Features: Unbleached fabric retains the natural cotton features, which is tough and long-lasting; it may contain some fine cotton seed particles, which is a normal characteristic of natural fabric, so please feel confident using it
  • Easy Care: Muslin fabric by yard can be machine-washed or hand-washed; we strongly recommend washing it at a low temperature and naturally drying the fabric to maintain its softness and durability
  • Multiple Uses: Cotton muslin material is widely used for crafts, sewing, and home decorating, including garments, curtains, bags, aprons, tablecloths, cushion covers, as well as dyeing, printing, and other DIY crafts

A fiber label tells you what the product contains; it does not grade quality or guarantee how the finished fabric will wear, drape, or feel. Cotton-related marketing terms do not replace the full composition: U.S. cotton claims must be truthful and not misleading, as explained in the FTC’s cotton labeling guidance.

3. Use fiber tendencies as clues, not guarantees

Fiber can help narrow the options, but construction, finishing, and care also affect behavior. The Canadian Conservation Institute describes several useful tendencies:

AK TRADING CO. Muslin Fabric/Textile Unbleached - Draping Fabric - Natural 10 Yards Medium Weight - 100% Cotton (63in. Wide)
  • ✅ CONTENTS & SIZE: 100% cotton and 63" wide natural unbleached medium weight natural cotton muslin fabric. Order of multiple quantities will be shipped in continuous length.
  • ✅ BEST QUALITY: This muslin fabric has a smooth finish, with a soft touch. It also has a natural light drape and stiffness, thanks to its cotton content. This fabric can also be machine washed and dried, but as always we highly recommend washing it in low settings, or hand washing and air drying fabrics in order to best retain its quality.
  • ✅ MULTIPLE USES: Muslin fabrics are a staple for fashion designers and quilters! Use them for backing, backdrops, embroidery, fittings, Draping and more. Used for clothing and curtains, along with quilting, craft and utilitarian functions.
  • ✅ SATISFACTION: With thousands of yards available all year round, you are sure to find that muslin fabric is great for many of your fabric needs. This fabric is manufactured and sold by AK TRADING CO.
  • Cotton: absorbent, and prone to wrinkling and shrinkage.
  • Linen: new linen is absorbent, quick-drying, and cool to the touch, but wrinkles readily.
  • Wool: insulating; moisture, heat, and mechanical action can cause felting.
  • Silk: strong and absorbent, but sensitive to light.

These are tendencies, not promises about every blend or finished textile. The Institute’s textile and costume conservation guidance explains these vulnerabilities in a conservation context.

4. Identify the construction as well as the fiber

Two fabrics made from similar fibers can behave differently because they are constructed or finished differently. ACT distinguishes woven fabrics, made from interlacing yarn systems; knits, made from interlocking loops; and coated fabrics, which use a substrate with a polymer wear layer. Construction affects the qualities to investigate for your project, so do not assume a fiber name alone tells you whether a fabric will stretch, hold shape, or suit a particular use.

  • Perfect for all of your sewing and crafting projects
  • 100% Ringspun Cotton
  • 2 Yards, 72 X 44 Inches

5. Match weight and structure to the pattern or application

Consider whether the material’s weight and stiffness fit the item you plan to make. A heavier or stiffer fabric may create more structure; a lighter or softer one may fall and move differently. Check the pattern or project requirements where available, and compare candidate fabrics directly. There is no universal weight threshold established here for all garments and projects.

6. Compare hand, drape, stretch, and surface

If you can, handle a sample. Notice how it falls, whether it stretches, how its surface feels against skin, and how its texture looks in the setting where it will be used. These are practical observations, not standardized tests, but they can reveal differences that a fiber label cannot.

Fabric swatch samples can make side-by-side comparison easier. Treat a swatch as a way to judge appearance and feel—not proof of long-term durability or compliance with a performance standard.

7. Ask what “durable” means for this use

Durability is not one property. For upholstery, for example, pilling, breaking strength, and seam slippage describe different potential problems. ACT publishes voluntary guidance for indoor woven contract fabrics, including test methods and application-specific criteria. Use those benchmarks only when the fabric and intended application fall within their scope.

For example, ACT’s current indoor woven-fabric guidance sets a minimum breaking strength of 50 lb in both warp and weft for upholstery under ASTM D5034 (Grab Test), and a 25 lb seam-slippage threshold under ASTM D4034. These are voluntary, upholstery-specific criteria—not general standards for clothing, drapery, or every household fabric. The criteria and methods are described in ACT’s indoor woven-fabric physical properties guidance.

8. Account for sunlight, moisture, and the environment

Think about where the finished item will spend its time. A fabric in a sunny window, a damp area, or an outdoor setting faces different conditions from one used indoors away from light and moisture. For contract textiles, ACT separates guidance by indoor and outdoor application; the Canadian Conservation Institute specifically notes silk’s sensitivity to light. Check that any performance information you receive relates to the actual exposure and intended use.

9. Check care instructions before you commit

Find out how the specific fabric or finished product must be washed, dried, ironed, or cleaned. If those instructions do not fit your routine or the item’s likely use, another fabric may be more practical. Do not infer care requirements from fiber content alone: follow the instructions for the candidate product. The Canadian Conservation Institute offers basic textile care guidance, while the product’s own label governs its stated care directions.

10. Compare candidates and ask for relevant evidence

Use a short comparison checklist to keep the decision tied to the project:

  • Intended use and exposure
  • Fiber composition
  • Woven, knit, or coated construction
  • Weight, hand, drape, and stretch
  • Care requirements
  • Performance data relevant to the application

For upholstery or contract use, ask about properties such as abrasion, pilling, breaking strength, seam slippage, colorfastness, or flammability only when they matter to the application. If a supplier provides laboratory results, confirm the test method and scope. ACT cautions that lab tests alone cannot predict field performance because care, maintenance, misuse, and environment also affect outcomes. A sample and a test report can inform the choice, but neither guarantees how the finished item will perform in every real setting.
