First, photograph the quilt, note anything you know about its maker and history, and check what is actually unfinished and whether the fabric and seams are sound. You do not have to complete it: a quilt top or a set of blocks can be preserved as it is, repaired, adapted, or displayed. If the textile is fragile, old, valuable, or historically significant, pause before washing or altering it and ask a textile conservator for advice.
Identify what you inherited before making changes
An “unfinished quilt” may be a complete pieced top without batting and backing, a partially assembled top, or a group of separate blocks. Those are different starting points: a sound top might be ready for quilting, while loose blocks may need to be assembled—or may be best kept intact.
Photograph the whole piece and any details, and write down the maker’s name, family stories, dates, inscriptions, and other information you already know. Keep those notes with the photographs. For a more detailed record, the International Quilt Museum documents dimensions, construction, binding, stitch count, fibers, fabrics, inscriptions, and known history in its collection surveys.

Choose whether to finish, preserve, or adapt it
Finishing is a personal choice, not an obligation. The Canadian Conservation Institute puts the balance plainly: “The desire to preserve a quilt must sometimes be balanced with its use.” Consider the quilt’s condition, how much original work you want to retain, and whether your priority is display, use, or preserving the maker’s work in its present state.

If the quilt top is sound, decide how to finish it
If the seams are intact, a top can be finished with backing and quilting. American Patchwork & Quilting describes machine quilting, hiring a longarm quilter, and hand quilting as options. A hand-pieced top can also be machine quilted; choosing that method does not diminish the original handwork.
Before proceeding, decide whether finishing is consistent with your goals for the textile. An intact top can also remain unfinished and be displayed or stored. If you are unsure whether the seams or fabric can withstand handling, get an experienced textile professional’s opinion before adding layers or stitching.

If it is damaged or in separate blocks
Check whether repairs are enough
For a damaged top, first determine whether loose or failed seams are the main issue. American Patchwork & Quilting describes replacing damaged pieces with similar fabric or patching small holes; a large quilt may also be dismantled to make smaller projects. These are project options, not a guarantee that every textile can safely tolerate repair. Fragile or significant pieces warrant conservation advice before intervention.
Give loose blocks a purpose without forcing the original plan
If you have separate blocks, you could make additional blocks in the same style and continue the design, assemble a smaller project such as a pillow, or frame blocks as art. The original quilt may have been intended to become something larger, but completing that plan is optional. Keeping the blocks together and documenting their history can preserve what survives without introducing new materials or seams.
Get advice before washing, repairing, or valuing an heirloom
A prized or fragile quilt should not be casually washed. The Canadian Conservation Institute explains that wet cleaning is difficult because a wet quilt is heavy; silk components or a quilt that has never been wet-cleaned may make the method unsuitable, and it advises against washing machines and dryers. The International Quilt Museum warns that washing can cause color bleeding, abrasion, and structural damage, even with gentle hand washing. Consult a textile conservator before washing an heirloom textile.

For minor repair decisions, the Canadian Conservation Institute recommends matching thread and fabric closely to the original, stitching by hand on a flat surface, using existing holes where possible, keeping stitches relaxed, and minimizing the number of stitches. This is conservation guidance—not a blanket invitation to restore a fragile heirloom yourself.
If dust is the concern, the Canadian Conservation Institute describes placing fibreglass screening over a quilt and vacuuming through it on low suction with a handheld vacuum. Lift rather than rub the nozzle and avoid brush attachments. The International Quilt Museum likewise describes low-suction vacuuming through soft netting. Because appropriate care depends on condition and treatment goals, ask a conservator before attempting any cleaning on especially valuable or fragile material.
For monetary value, contact a professional, certified quilt appraiser who can examine the piece in person. The National Quilt Museum says it cannot determine value for owners and recommends contacting a quilt conservator for advice about cleaning and caring for an antique quilt.

Store it to limit light, moisture, and crease damage
Choose a stable place away from strong light, dampness, pests, and abrupt environmental changes. Avoid attics, basements, kitchens, laundry rooms, and unheated spaces. Keep the quilt away from direct contact with ordinary cardboard and wood; archival tissue or washed cotton muslin can serve as a barrier.
Rolling is preferable when practical
The Canadian Conservation Institute advises avoiding stacking and folding when possible. It suggests rolling a quilt onto an acid-free cardboard tube at least 15 cm in diameter to reduce compression. If an appropriate tube is unavailable, it describes covering a cardboard tube or wood dowel with Mylar or polyethylene sheeting. A rolled quilt can be wrapped in prewashed unbleached muslin or cotton sheeting. Avoid plastic wrapping that blocks air and can allow moisture to build up.
If folding is necessary, cushion the folds
Pad folds with rolled acid-free tissue, muslin, or polyester batting, and refold periodically so the same creases are not maintained indefinitely. Use the cleanest, driest, most stable storage location available rather than relying on a particular temperature setting to compensate for a damp or fluctuating environment.

Display with support and breaks
Strong light can harm textiles, and hanging a fragile or poor-condition quilt can stress its fabric and stitching. Damp outside walls and locations near radiators or fireplaces add risks. If you display a quilt, spread its weight evenly and alternate display with storage periods rather than leaving it continuously exposed or under tension.
Published preservation targets are not universal household requirements. The International Quilt Museum recommends 62°F to 72°F and 45 to 55 percent relative humidity for home storage; a University of Nebraska–Lincoln Extension guide revised in 2007 gives 50 to 60°F and about 50 percent relative humidity. These are source-specific preservation recommendations, not a guarantee of preservation or a mandatory setting for every home.
