This AllPeopleQuilt project makes a compact orange felt pouch with a padded black spider, ribbon handles and a stitched smile. Finished size is 5¼ × 5¼ × 1½ inches, excluding the handles. It is best suited to gifting a couple of candy bars, rather than carrying a full trick-or-treat haul.
What the project makes
The project, titled Spooky Spider Treat Bag, pairs a simple felt pouch with a smiling spider appliqué. The companion pattern credits Ellen Crimi-Trent as designer; the video page credits American Patchwork & Quilting Editors. The sew-along runs 6 minutes and 20 seconds and was published October 13, 2016. The written pattern page displays an update date of August 22, 2025.
The body is orange wool felt, with a black felt spider, wiggle eyes, a white stitched mouth and ribbon handles. Since felt does not fray, the appliqué edges can remain raw rather than being turned under.

The pattern specifies wool felt. The video presenter notes that thinner craft felt may be less suitable for this project.

The written pattern and its printable cutting shapes provide the oval template and project instructions.
How to assemble the bag
- Make the spider body. Center the black felt oval on one orange square. Stitch around it, leaving an opening, add a little fiberfill, then stitch the opening closed.
- Add the legs while the appliqué is flat. Use a wide zigzag for the six legs and a narrower zigzag for their feet. The video recommends stitching the legs before stuffing the oval so the two felt layers are easier to guide under the presser foot. Six legs fit the small design most straightforwardly; the presenter says eight can be squeezed in.
- Finish the face. Attach the wiggle eyes, using craft glue if they are not self-adhesive. The pattern calls for a hand chain-stitched smile in white embroidery floss. In the video, the presenter instead uses a decorative satin-scallop machine stitch.
- Build the gusset strip. Sew the three orange rectangles end to end to make one long strip.
- Join the front, gusset and back. With raw edges aligned and facing out, sew the long strip around three edges of the decorated front square and the plain back square. Pivot at the corners and use a ¼-inch seam allowance.
- Attach the handles. Sew one 12-inch ribbon length to each side of the bag.
Choose hand or machine stitching for the details
The smile is the clearest choice between the written pattern and the video: the pattern gives a hand chain stitch, while the video demonstrates a decorative machine stitch. A sewing machine is useful for the zigzag legs and bag seams shown in the tutorial, but the hand-embroidered smile is a no-machine alternative for that detail. The video page describes its 2016 demonstration as sponsored by Baby Lock and the Crescendo machine; that historical credit is not a current product recommendation.

At 5¼ × 5¼ × 1½ inches before handles, this is a little gift pouch, not a roomy candy-collecting bag. The presenter describes it as able to hold a couple of candy bars and says it is “not so much made for trick or treating.” Use it for a small seasonal gift or a few treats rather than expecting the capacity of a conventional trick-or-treat bag.
