The Autumn Prairie Points Table Topper is a 26½-inch-square quilt with a pieced center and a border of 36 folded fabric points—nine along each side. Its pattern specifies 44/45-inch-wide cotton fabrics, a 35-inch-square piece of batting and one yard of backing. Harvest Reflections by Benartex inspired the autumn palette, but the supply list specifies colors and quantities rather than requiring that collection.

Project at a glance

Detail Pattern specification
Finished size 26½ inches square
Finished block size 8 inches square
Fabric basis 44/45-inch-wide, 100% cotton; measurements include ¼-inch seam allowances
Prairie points 36 total, nine along each side
Batting One 35-inch-square piece
Backing One yard

The pattern was designed by Cyndi Walker of Stitch Studios and tested by Laura Boehnke. American Patchwork & Quilting Editors described the Benartex Harvest Reflections inspiration as “decidedly autumn-inspired” and suited to a nature lover. See the project page.

Fabric and supplies

The written supply list works from an autumn palette of green, red, gold and orange prints, with supporting cream, rust, blue, tan and multicolor fabrics. Yardages are for the specified cotton width; check usable width and calculate the separate cuts before substituting fabric or buying a bundle.

  • ½ yard total assorted light-to-medium green, red, gold and orange prints
  • ⅓ yard cream print
  • ¼ yard rust print
  • ⅛ yard blue print
  • ⅝ yard tan print, used for the outer border and binding
  • One 9-by-18-inch piece (a fat eighth) of multicolor circle print
  • One yard backing fabric
  • One 35-inch-square piece of batting

The cutting plan uses 36 assorted-print 3-inch squares for the points and 40 more assorted-print 1½-inch squares in the piecing. Other fabrics are cut into specified squares, rectangles, border pieces and binding strips. Print scale matters: smaller prints are easier to read in the small pieced units, while coordinated prints can provide the autumn variety without requiring the named inspiration collection.

How the center and borders are assembled

Piece the center

Begin with five four-patch units and eight small flying-geese units. Combine these with cream rectangles and a cream square to make four corner units, then assemble the center block. At this stage it measures 8½ inches square, including seam allowances, for an 8-inch finished block.

Add the background frames

Make 12 larger flying-geese units from cream squares and rust rectangles. Together with cream squares, these form inner background strips around the center. Rust squares and additional flying-geese units make the outer background strips. The resulting quilt center measures 16½ inches square, including seam allowances. Attach the blue inner border before preparing the prairie points.

  • Designed by Jennifer Bosworth for Shabby Fabrics

Make and attach the prairie-point border

  1. Fold each 3-inch assorted-print square diagonally, then fold it in half again to form a point. Make 36.
  2. On each tan outer-border strip, position nine points evenly, with neighboring edges overlapping. Keep each point ½ inch from the strip ends, and orient every folded edge in the same direction.
  3. Machine-baste the points to the border strip with a scant ¼-inch seam. When attaching the outer-border strips to the quilt, aim the point tips toward the outer edge.
  4. Layer the completed top with batting and backing, baste the layers, and quilt as desired.
  5. Finish by binding the quilt with the tan strips.

Keeping the folded edges aligned and all tips aimed outward is central to the fern-like border effect. The evenly spaced, slightly overlapping points are secured before the border is attached, making that placement easier to manage.

Pattern and collection notes

The project page, published June 14, 2013, identifies Harvest Reflections by Benartex as its design inspiration; the written yardage list does not make that collection mandatory. The publisher’s table-topper pattern index also lists this project.
