The Carolina Lily Tabletop Quilt is a small American Patchwork & Quilting Editors’ project finished at 13 × 17 inches, with 5-inch-square blocks. It combines pieced lily flowers with machine-appliquéd stems and leaves, then frames the quilt center with pink and pieced blue-and-white borders.
Project size and pattern details
The pattern was published June 14, 2013. Its finished quilt measures 13 × 17 inches, and each finished block measures 5 inches square. Those are the pattern’s stated finished dimensions; cutting measurements include ¼-inch seam allowances.
This is a tabletop decor quilt, not a bed-size project. The instructions do not specify a difficulty rating, estimated completion time, cost, or required quilting design.

The pattern calls for assorted 100% cotton fabrics. It specifies a fat quarter for the tan blocks and center, plus fabric for the flowers, stems and leaves, borders, and binding. The full project material list also includes:
#1 Best Overall
- A fat-quarter piece of backing fabric
- 18 × 22 inches of batting
- Lightweight fusible web for the appliqué shapes
- Thread and standard quilting supplies
The project page does not require a particular fabric brand. A quilting ruler can help with accurate cutting, and a sewing machine that makes a narrow zigzag or blind-hem stitch supports the stated appliqué finish.
How the Carolina Lily quilt is constructed
Prepare the appliqué and stems
Trace the appliqué shapes onto lightweight fusible web and prepare the stems as bias strips. The pattern’s documented approach uses fusible web to position the appliqué; using needle-turn or another method instead is a personal adaptation, not the method specified in these instructions.

- Cat Scratch Quilt Pattern Booklet.
- This pattern includes the instructions to create a unique quilt featuring cats and fish in two sizes, 55.5in x 62in and 40in x 40in.
- This quilt is traditionally pieced.
- The pattern is 32 pages, printed in full color and saddle stitched with a soft laminate cover.
Piece the flower blocks
Make the flower units from Flying Geese and Four-Patch components, adding the tan background pieces as directed. Incorporate the stems into the blocks, then join the blocks with the tan center to form the quilt top’s central arrangement.

Arrange and stitch the leaves and stems
Place the prepared stems and leaves across the quilt center, fuse them in position, and secure their edges with a narrow machine-zigzag or blind-hem stitch. The pattern combines piecing for the flowers with appliqué for the stems and leaves.

Add borders and finish

The tabletop pattern draws on a quilt motif with a longer history, but it should not be confused with any particular museum quilt. The Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History dates its own Carolina Lily album quilt to 1840–1860 and notes that the pattern was popular in the mid-19th century. A separate North Carolina Lily quilt record at the Spencer Museum of Art dates its example to circa 1850–1900. Its label describes the Lily pattern as combining pieced flowers with appliquéd stems and leaves.

These collection records offer historical context; they do not establish that the 2013 tabletop project reproduces either museum object. The modern pattern is credited to the American Patchwork & Quilting Editors.
