The Blast from the Past Mystery Sampler is a completed 30-block quilt project from American Patchwork & Quilting, with free linked block patterns and finishing instructions on the publisher’s project page. Blocks finish at 6, 9, or 12 inches, and the completed quilt measures 60.5 by 64.5 inches. The project is presented in the publisher’s archive, not as a currently running mystery.
What is the Blast from the Past Mystery Sampler?
American Patchwork & Quilting created the sampler to mark the magazine’s 30th anniversary in 2023, choosing one block from each year of its history. The project page describes a schedule that alternated between releasing two and three blocks per month; all 30 blocks and finishing instructions are now linked there. The publisher also described the sampler as free in an April 4, 2022 podcast page, and its quilt-along index lists it among archived projects.

These are the publisher’s pattern specifications, not independent test measurements. The page provides alternate block patterns in each of the three sizes, giving you options if you want to substitute blocks while working within the project’s size categories.

Fabric requirements
The official page lists the following yardage for the project:

Use the project’s downloadable fabric-requirements sheet to confirm the pattern specifications before cutting. The stated quantities are for the project as specified; fabric width, usable selvage-to-selvage width, and cutting choices can affect what you need in practice.

Planning colors and fabric
Choose fabrics by value—light, medium, and dark—rather than relying on a particular collection. The pattern calls for at least two fabrics within each value group, and each can be a print or a solid. That gives you flexibility to combine stash fabric with new quilting cotton by the yard, as long as the groups remain distinct enough to read as light, medium, and dark across the blocks.
- Check contrast: Lay candidate fabrics together and confirm that the light, medium, and dark groups remain visually distinguishable.
- Coordinate the framing fabrics: Plan the border, backing, and binding separately from the block groups, using the listed amounts as your starting point.
- Treat collection names as examples: The publisher’s page shows fabrics from collections including Love, Lily, Soiree, Maple Hill, Iris and Ivy, and Blizzard Blues. These are project examples, not a required shopping list or confirmation that those collections are still available.
Are AccuQuilt dies required?
No. The project page suggests AccuQuilt dies for particular cuts; it does not state that a cutter or any die is required. The AccuQuilt GO! Value Die is one named option: the publisher says it cuts 2.5-inch squares and triangle squares used in selected blocks, and notes that the die is included in the GO! Fabric Cutter Starter Set. Other suggestions include strip cutters, square dies, and flying-geese dies.

If you already own compatible equipment, check the notes beside each block to see whether a suggested die matches its cuts. Otherwise, follow the pattern’s cutting instructions with your usual ruler and rotary cutter. The pattern provides a no-die route; the die suggestions are optional conveniences.
