Skandamata is the form of Parvati revered as the mother of Skanda, also known as Kartikeya. She is worshipped on the fifth day of Navratri. Her familiar image shows the goddess with the child Skanda, lotus flowers, and a lion; a commonly listed mantra is “Om Devi Skandamatre Namah.”
Who is Skandamata?
The name Skandamata means “mother of Skanda.” Skanda is also known as Kartikeya; in some traditions and source descriptions, he is called Murugan. Skandamata is therefore Parvati understood in her maternal role, rather than a separate goddess unrelated to Parvati. Drik Panchang’s devotional reference explains the name through Parvati’s becoming Skanda’s mother.

2026 dates depend on the Navratri season
For Chaitra Navratri in 2026, The Times of India’s March 22, 2026 article identifies the fifth day as March 23 and associates it with white. For Shardiya Navratri, The Divine India’s calendar listing gives Thursday, October 15, 2026, as the fifth day. These are season- and year-specific listings, not fixed annual dates.
